| jahootie defiantly the year for you to stick that giant. ![]() you will get emTalking to my buddy's that fished NC and were greatly successful 90% of there catch was taken on a sea witch skirt over a bally on the planer. Give Adam on the CR an email i think he is going to be selling the sea witches that they where using this winter i am sure he could hook you up with some.

| Ok there are 2 ways I use a planer rod... For Carolina Bluefin: The way I fish the planer rod is similar to a down rigger. When Bluefin fishing in N.C. we troll 3 rods. 1 out of the outrigger and 2 deep. In the past I used downriggers. I would attach a #24 planer to 250 lb. braid line and send the planer down to the desired depth ( remember that that to get the desired depth you have to let about twice the line out because your going 4.5 to 5 kts ) then use a double snap swivel snaping one end on the downrigger braid and the other to a rubber band attached to the mainline on the 130..... The problem I had with this set-up was that the double snap never seemed to go as deep as I wanted because the swivel would only slid down to the bow in the line created by the drag through the water.... The second is thart with only 2 people me and my girlfriend fishing, cranking up a downrigger with 1to1 gear ratio takes to long when lines need to be cleared to backdown and fight the fish... After speaking to several Capts. fishing planer rods, and having a planer Guru running my cockpit... This is the system that worked the best for us... First of all I had my planer rod built a bit shorter than most 3ft 9in out of a 80lb. blank due to the fact that a #24 planer has some BIG drag and I did not want the rod to flex to much... Second I used a 80w 2 speed for a reel. I use 130 lb mono for backing and 150lb Diawa Saltiga braid for my topshot. I chose that braid because it was color marked every 10 yds and had a marks every yd. so I knew exactly how much line was down.... Next I attached a 300 lb wind-on spro swivel to 200lb mono with a loop crimped in the mono @ the swivel then crimped the end to the brass ring on the planer... To attach the line from the rod I made a 15in tag line with swivels on either end one connected to the loop I made in the 200lb mono on the planer rods line, the other to a rubber band on the 130 rods main line. So there was not chance of the planer bumping and chaffing the main-line on the rod... How I would deploy this set-up is. 1. Let the main-line on the rod out to my desired length using a line counter. 2. Wrap a # 64 rubber band around the main-line and snap one end of my "tag" line to the loop in the band... Then snap the other "tag" line snap to the loop in the mono on the planer line. 3. Then put BOTH the planer rod and the 130 in free spool. Drop the planer in the water and thumb both spools until you reach desired depth. Once at depth set the drag on the reels the planer rod should be pretty much locked up... That planer will take line off at 40 lbs of drag @ 5kts. The advantages are that when the fish bites the planer will "trip" and be easy to reel up.. And also fast to clear with the 3 to 1 ratio of the 80w.. You also do not have big downrigger to clear out of the way or bolted to the gunnel when fighting a fish... the planer rod can just be moved to another rod holder or up to the rocket launcher.... This may seem complicated but with some pictures you will see it is pretty simple... Remember that this system worked for me all winter with 2 or 3 people fishing on a 52ft boat with no cockpit controls... It is a simple easy way to troll deep baits with a short handed crew.. With big Bluefin in a fleet of boats packed in a tight area you need to clear lines and chase that fish and get him straight up and down as fast as you can so your fish does not end up in someone elses lines or spooling you... I will be posting up the way I use the planer for Yellowfin, Bigeye and Wahoo... As soon as I can... THIS WAY WILL HELP YOU CATCH IN THE NORTHERN CANYONS.... I will post pics of the set-up as soon as can figure how to freakin do it... Capt. Mike |
