| Well we originally planned to head towards to the tails but made a wise, last minute decision to head towards Atlantis Canyon and chase that REAL WARM bubble of water. Left the dock on Wed (8/29) at 5:30AM from Newport south-southeast towards Atlantis. Owner/Capt wanted to continue south to find that warm water (even though we heard a person hook up with BIG EYE just above the Canyon in 74-75 degree water! )....We finally found 80 degree water about 30+ miles south of Atlantis Canyon and the adventure began. Laid out the spread and began trolling. Before we could set the last short rigger in the clip, the line was wacked by a billfish (unknown at that point)! That fished continued to knock down two other lines on the other side of the spread. Fish came up stuck it's head out - Blue Marlin est. 500+ pounds! Three knock downs no hookup (Marlin-1, Us-0). Continued to troll past some debris in the water and had a double Mahi hookup. As we slowed the boat, I looked back in the short center line of the spread and saw a wahoo jump on for a ride. I immediately grabbed the rod and fought the fish as the 15-18 lb Mahi were boated. Got the wahoo in the boat a nice long fish (est. 35 lbs.). Continued the troll and started heading north as we heard people hooking up with Big Eye (the fish we were targeting) up in West Atlantis. With no other hookup's in the deep we picked up the lines and went to an area just east of West Atlantis on the shelf. Ran into a few whales and began the troll again. Lines went off a were able to manage a BIG FAT ALBERT (54 LBS. Actual!...Biggest Albie I've caught). Lines set back out and we continued our troll west towards the canyon. Another Whale and BOOM fish on! YellowFin (78 LB. actual)...NICE FISH, nice color! Reset the spread and just before contemplating where we were going to setup the nightbite a HUGE SPLASH in the short center line....REEL SCREAMING! (Penn 70vs)....drag way up, line still dumping!! We pulled in the rest of the spread and the fight was On!!.....Gained on the fish. Rod bend was unbelieveable! And about 45 mins later....leader starts showing, fish comes up HUGE EYEBALL!! Three gaffs and the fish was put in the boat. WOW....what a fish (measured fork length 68.5 inches....never got it weighed, but est. 225-250 LBS.!! ....SWEEEET!). Setup for the night bite on the east edge of West Atlantis. Didn't drop the hooked, just drifted through the night. Fog rolled in and couldn't see the back of the transom at one point. Not much happening. Heard of a few swords/tuna taken nearby, but only had one runoff the whole night on the sword baits. Not much luck on the chunks either, besides a few more small mahi. At one point a large unknown came out from under the boat and bumped the line near the boat which was being retrieved due to a ton of weed. Threw some chunks in the water while we got a pitch bait ready, but it never returned. DID I MENTION A TON OF WEED! It was insane and a pain in the a$$ to deal with! Next morning setup the troll by 5am off and running east along the edge. Managed another yellowfin (78lbs actual) and headed back to the barn around 9:30AM (as the owner wanted to get back to watch the Red Sox Game - That's just another story in itself...can we say sweeep? Uggh!). Back in Newport for the photo shoot and the MAJOR Cleanup (68' vessel is no easy task to clean - approx. cleaning time 2 hrs. 4 guys - BEAT!) One other note; As we were throwing some small chunks of tuna carcass around the pilings a ton of large stripers were going crazy! Dropped a line in with a small piece and boom FISH ON!! pulled in a respectable 26 lb. striper (along with several others.) ALL in ALL a great trip!! ![]() Final Tally (in the boat): 1 Big Eye 2 YellowFin 1 Albie 5 Mahi 1 Wahoo (PICS and Catch info to Follow, hopefully tonight....Now back to reality...my Job!!...Whew I am beat) ![]() | ||
