Season closer - Mudhole and surrounds 10/17

Short story today. One keeper cod (wtf?), one leatherback turtle, and no tuna signs. Totally FAC conditions until the end of the day, when it got a little sloppy for the ride in.

Special thanks to Bill Brown who attempted to put us on the fish while out on the water. Unfortunately we couldn’t go the distance that would have been required since I left the dock with a partial tank (more than enough for a long exploratory expedition to the mudhole, but not enough to pick up and run 25 miles south). I never do that, but since this was the last trip of the year, I wanted to have as empty a tank as possible for winter storage. Bill started out up north also and ran elsewhere on a good tip and ended up having a good day.

Lesson learned, I should have followed the water (the first good temp shot was posted yesterday morning after we left, and it was dramatic – no wonder that Bill found the fish where he did), but was hopeful that the schoolies would still be following the draggers up north. They weren’t; with several people reporting (including Bill who actually gave us coord’s for two which we found) that there were no tuna with the draggers. We didn’t spot any either.

We trolled for quite a ways and then just set up in a couple of spots that gave us good drift over structure, which is where we picked up the cod. One of the guys got interested in what the bottom fishermen were pulling up (the pj boats run sea bass and porgy trips), so he dropped a stray crab we found in the bait and pulled up a cod. I guess that’s all they have to eat since the dogfish eat everything else. It also explains why the draggers are pounding the area. They want to ensure the cod never, ever, rebuild in our waters.

As for the leatherback, well, he foul hooked himself on one of our lines and as we were pulling him in to release, he popped the hook. No harm, no foul. But a damned interesting site!

Long day, we left the dock in the dark at 5:30 am and returned almost 12 hours later.

Still better than being at work.

gerg, saw a big pile of fish on the bottom in the vacinity you mentioned, but saw a dragger to the south so kept trolling in that direction. Now I wonder if we should have stopped. We've gotten many cod in that area in the spring. Anyway it was a great day. All the focus will be on tog for a few weeks to wrap things up..........

I did here on the radio that the bite seemed to be at Ryan's...........

Tog

Been fishing the rock piles South of Newport and to the East. The charter fleet will really start to hit them now that the limit is going up. We've had better luck on the small rock piles in deeper water.....

Tried an area on the SE side of Block yesterday, but just couldn't get set right so we headed North.

I've been fishing the same areas.....and yes, the lack of charters has been because of the small limits....come monday it'll be a parking lot! Then it'll be time to get on the hook early LOL. It's been nice lately because I can hit a few bass spots with eels at sunrise, spend a little time doing that and then go get on a good pile.

That's gonna change soon LOL.

74, without a doubt. I've been trying to get my fish now. Last year boats were piled on top each other like planes at TF............just gotta get creative and hit the small spots and pick a few here and there.

Incidentally I called the number you supplied me on the JT structure reef. Waiting for the reply.

Yup. I had to go back anbd install an anti-siphon vent, but it came out well. that brings my cap up to 230 gallons. Of course it was empty for this trip......

Thats great!

I want to add some more tankage to my 2530, still trying to find the best spot though. I wish I had a well in the deck like your boat to make it easier.
