sharkin south of MV

Hoop and i did our first trip of the season on sunday the 6th.
Splashed in falmouth a little late @ around 7:00 and went in search of fresh blues. In typical fashion we caught everything but blues. Schoolie bass on niners one after another on middle ground. Managed 1 blue in about 2 hours so we called it bait and headed out in managable fog. Got set up a few miles south of the claw in 67degree water. No wind and FAC. Could not get the kite to fly so we set our typical 3 rod spread. Took about and hour for the first fin in the slick and 10 minutes later we had our first little blue shark on. Hoop took all of 5 mins to get him boat side and we released the first shark of 08.

Over the next few hours we hooked up on several more small blue sharks.
At one point i was looking out into the FAC water and caught site of a nice mako freejump a ways out, and then the antisipation of getting him in the slick but it never happened.

By 2:00 We were totaly overrun by small blues and could not get our bait away from the boat without hooking one of the small 100 lb sharks that surrounded the boat. Hoop did get to tug on a nice big blue in the 9' range. She was released after a 20 min battle

Around 5:00 we desided to call it a day and try trolling back up our slick about 10 min into our troll we caught sight of a wip slashing about 150 yards off out port side. Hoop set a coarse and we readyed a pitch bait. We got to the spot and made a pass but nothing so we set 2 rods back out with bait. Just as the baits got set the wip surfaced about 20 feet off the stearn and quickly dove and dissapeared off the port side. She was a good 300 and moving quicky. We hung out for a while but only got run over by the little blues again. One of them being a small 5 footer with a tag that was with us all day. It was getting late and we had to get going so we called it a day.

Over the coarse of the day we saw birds, flying fish, whales, halfbeaks, a free jumping mako, and a slashing thresher, we also had alot of bait getting pushed up around the boat for most of the day but could not ID them..

Total for the day was alot of schoolie bass, 1 bluefish, 10 blue sharks. Not including the 4 1/2 footer i caught by the tail bare handed as he swam by the boat .

Not what we were hopping for but an ok day.

No sign of BFT out there but we did have some numb nuts troll big rubber rafts right through our slick at about 200 yards of the stearn about 2 hours into the day.. He was on a coarse to come across our bow as he aproached us from our port bow but turned when he saw our ballons and desided run us on the port side and cut across our stearn instead and cut the slick. Tried to thank him on the radio but no answer.

No edicate at all. No one owns the ocean but some common sense goes a long way..

Good report. I was in that area on Saturday and swore I saw a flying fish, but only once. Thanks for confirming and helping keep me somewhat sane.

Get Reel NOPE you aint crazy it was definately Flyin Fish. We saw 4 or 5 pods of them sometimes within 50' of the boat while we were at rest, not under way. It was kinda odd seeing them in dirty sub 70 degree water. but we did see them ..

On The Edge,
You ever bottom fish while your out drifting for shark in the Coxes, Claw area's? Hope to try the shark thing this summer but know nothing about it other than what I observed on a charter I took years back. Just wondering if I should bring some clam or something since I'm out there.

AT,
Done a bit of bottom fishing while sharking out there around the claw , Tuna ridge, fingers, dump, etc, mostly to pass the time, and never got anything but Doggies. Surface temps for sharkin are up close to and above 70 degrees so i think it is a bit warm. If you want to get out sharkin some time let me know. Hoop and i are always looking for crew.. We are far from experts but we do OK.
