I guess as long as you know the difference it's ok. But unlike Brad I know little about sharks, except "there goe's another $4.00 hook and my dam floro. leader.

Don
Floro leader!!!! I've got to take you sharking some time.

I've got plenty of leader's and ready to make up more for the show .

They must have paid the guys on "Jersy Cape" a lot of money to let themselves look like such big jerks.

Armand

Oh yeah, Dom, I was just trying to give general way to tell from a distance. Check out the link I put up there, it gives lots of good distinctions. Thanks for your help though.

I can't figure why they say we don't have big ones on the east coast, 2nd time I ever went sharking at the mud hole I had an 8' mako at the boat. Couldn't gaff him. What do you figure the weight is for an 8'???

Armand, I did my homework on that site you listed for me.
Remembered they had a length/weight chart for mako.
It came in handy already.

Mako Stats.
Fork length Pounds
11 feet female 1,000 pounds
10-1/2 female 850
10 feet female 750
9-1/2 female 620
9 feet 525
8-1/2 440 pounds
8 feet 360
7-1/2 300
7 feet 240
6-1/2 190
6 feet 150 pounds

Remember that there is a big difference in fork length vs. total length.

Although Makos have typically the smallest difference in the 2 dims....blues have a much larger difference. Threshers...well......fork is about all you can count there LOLOL

And there can be big differences in girth (how they've been eating, is there something stuck in their gut, such as a plug.....etc etc)

Thanks very much, I hadn't seen that chart. I was guessing that the length was from the base of the tail atleast 8' could have been a little more. So it was atleast 350++ Cool. That's a good sized Mako.

Thanks again

Armand

The largest Makos in the world have been caught here from chatham north If you want a true monster, fish from september on for them I have acouple pics of the dorsal of a serious contender to the record from last august It was first light we were headed tuna fishing and this beast was just up on the surface All I had for bait was squid n butters I dragged the wire acrossed it's nose it went down came back up and wouldn't let us get close Tried for about 20 mins and left her I run a 23'er so landing it would've been hairy to say the least but fighting it would have been a thrill for sure
Last season we had fish in the 10' range come up in the spread 1/2 dozen times on as many trips only 2 grabbed something both on mono both gone without taking 10' of line

Will Mako's actually grab a spreader bar being dragged in a spread?

It's been known to happen they are capable of swimming up to 30 knots. One of the quickest sharks in the ocean. People have actually had Mako's take tuna as they were being brout in.
