Spooling international 80 wides

What are most spooling reels with ?
80 wides (international, shimano's, accurates)
Using mono, braid, hollow core braid ?
Also, What is the advantage of hollow core braid over other braids ?
and what amounts (length) are you using ? dacron backing, line, top shot ?
Thanks

I can't speak for the 80's but I spooled my 70's with JB holow core spectra 130 lb. I put 50% more line on than using 80lb mono. The line is supposed to last almost forever and is spliceable if you damage or loose some of it.

Tha main advantage over braid is it won't cut like braid will and you can form a no knot loop for attachment or windons or top shots. I just bought a pair of new 16VSX's with 80lb JB HCS. Eventually I want to convert all my reels to it.

I just spooled 2 30 wides with hollow core JB Spectra. For the smaller reels a real plus to using the hollow core is that line capacity you can hold. The 30 wides are rated for 600 yds of 50 lb mono, with the JB I was able to spool 600 yds of 80 plus a 100 yd top shot of 80 lb mono. The reason for the long top shpt is that you would expect most of the nicks etc to happen when the fish gets close to the boat this way you are protecting the hollow core and if something happens you only need to replace the mono topshot. Also as has already been stated hollow core is suppose to last for ever.

I haven't done any of my own splicing of topshots, I paid this time, but I plan to learn and do it in the future.

I currently have all my reels spooled with Momoi diamond mono with no backing.....including my 80W's....... however I've been giving serious consideration to the JB hollow core. Normally I spool every reel one class higher (e.g. 50's with 80 #, 80's with 100#, etc.). With wides you have less of a concern being spooled than with a standard reel, but seems that a lot of people are going with the JB hollow core these days.......... if I were going with the hollow core, I would serioulsy consider a mono top shot since the hollow core has virtually no stretch....

Just keep in mind that if you're fishing in any tourneys using IGFA rules, your line (whatever you've got for dacron backing, etc.) can't test above 130. Most of this stuff overtests anyway, and the hollow core can go WAY above its rating. Hate to see someone fail a line test in that situation. At least that's the way I interpret the rules. Anyone have another opinion?

Right on and well said Charlie. I loaded a VSW80 with 500 Yards of Jerry Brown Hollow core and then put on a top shot of about 300 yards of 100 pound test momoi diamond using the splice knot. I loved this set up for bluefin tuna trolling but had to respool the entire reel for the Monster Shark tournament because that line over tests 130 pounds. Respooling cost me an unexpected added expense to fishing the tournament.

Ronnie,
For the trolling rods I just keep it simple and fill the reel with 100-pound test big game. No need for more line when you can chase the fish with the boat.
