Striped Bass at the seafood counter

My wife stopped by the local Roche Bros. yesterday. She told me they were selling striped bass for $16.99/pound! Where's the bass coming from this time of year?

I know someone who used to sell fish to a local market in oct/nov. The owner would freeze them whole, immediately. As the winter progressed he would thaw and filet them, thus fresh filets all winter. As you might suspect, this was not completely legal. And before you get all critical, this was NOT ME!
