Striper Experts

What would you say is a perfect striper outfit. Spinning versus conventional. What size reel and rod etc

We dont do alot of inshore but with my younger son wanting to go fishing with Anthony and I we may start doing some inshore blues/bass/fluke and maybe use it for togging as well. I know its a broad range but I would like your input

My personal pick for boat use would be the Avet LX6.0:1 and for a rod would be the triflex i ithink its 20-40 lb class. I hope fishermans paradise jumps in with the rod number. I actually use the Avet with a tica boat master rod 7 ft ,20-35 lb class. its alittle heavy for fluke but I love it for stripers and it works very well with Tog.
my wife loves her Shamino tekota 700 and get lamiglass 6 1/2 30-60 lbs rod. she uses it for everything out there.
for a spinning reel I use shamino 4500 baitrunners with a star 6 ft 20-40 lb class.Im going to be down sizeing the class of the rod soon. its alittle to stiff. Here is a couple of pics of mine

Hooked Need some additional info

Great question and some good info so far. Let's take it up a notch and add some heat to your choices....

1> Is there a particular style of striper fishing you wish to do?
Live Bait, dead bait, top water, verticale jigging, wire line jigging

2>Is there a particular area you think you'll be spending most of your time in and what works there?

3> Is there a particular type or style of equipment you just naturally like to use?
conventional or spin?

4> How frequently do you honestly feel you'll be striper fishing?
5> How many set ups do you think you will need?

Now your starting to think big picture and investment...

Here's what we bring out on the grounds for mixed day of bass and blues while in good fluke and tog water...bear in mind we are running a charter operation and as the warning label would say "your needs may vary"

We fish the Vineyard heavy and surrounding rips, cuts, channels and structure. There is no one size fits all magic bullet so we bring the whole quiver..
(4 )wire rod set ups...2 for jigging and 2 for spoon trolling...these have Penn 113H with wire shots every 100 feet with 10 foot dacron splices between each shot. They are color coded so if someone lets out too much or not enough I can tell with a quick glance

(4) spin set ups..all bait runner versions on St Croix Tide Master Rods..more about that later. Reels are loaded with any quality mono 15 pound test and respooled after any heavy days or once a month whichever comes first..plugs, soft plastics, some livey gets the nod here

(4) conventional set ups for yo yo applications, verticle jigging, live lining, eel pitchin, and fluke...they currently have Penn 975 LD's and being changed over to Accurate's...more on that later...loaded with 65 pound spectra and a 20 foot top shot of 30-50 pound mono depending on location..

Now to fess up I am on the St. Croix program and pleased with the product....I am also on Accurate's Pro Staff and have been using the products as a retail customer for over three years...I simply feel that they are putting out a product that I have used inshore and off shore without a single problem...I will not spam the site any further than to give them a tumbs up

You can reach me through my web site if you like.

Like I said when I began this post there are a lot of good company's and products out there and you will get some great input from the members here.

If you get up this way there's some great shops. Capt. Eric Stewart's , The Hook Up in Orleans, Falmouth Bait, Red Top, J&B in Nyantic, Boondogels in Deep River and a whole bunch more. I also underatnd Hinch Marina in NJ is top notch..

Hope this helps

For livelining, I personally use a St. Croix musky rod 7ft 17-40lb class, a daiwa saltist 30T, loaded with 25lb Sufix Supreme. I've caught bass up to 50lbs with this setup and no problems

That stick is a BL 7040C from Lamiglas Pat and I agree it is a powerhouse, but as an all purpose, you might also look at the BL 7050LB, it is 20 to 50 but has a very light tip for live bait fishing yet still still a ton of backbone for landing a cow.

This is a great question. I am just as curious to see some of the responses as well. I was and still am in the market for a few new reels. I can tell you what I used and what I just bought.

You mentioned inshore and offshore. Big difference. I was using a Penn 975 on a St. Croix PM66MHF, and a PM70MHF for South shore LI offshore and Orient Point (race and gut). Great reel, no problems with it. Great rod and will stick with it. But having a short attention span with reels, I was looking for something else to try. I was also looking to get away from levelwind reels. I will still use them for the guest fisher or newbie on the boat. The levelwind will help the newbie by not having to concentrate on thumbing the line back on the spool. For inshore I was using A St.Croix PC66MF and a PCMHF. with a Penn 965.

So with that said, I bought Shimano's Trinidad series. The T14 and the T20. The 14 I bought for inshore bassing to put on my PCMHF. This setup will also second as a offshore fluke setup. For offhore I bought the T20 to put on my PM70MHF. Heres the problem.....I think the 20 is too big. This setup is more geared to blackfishing than bassing. But....I will try it out. I think Shimano need a reel in between the 14 and 20. They offer a 16 but it's the same has the same size and internals as the 20, just slightly narrower. I like the large handles on the trinis. I also like the 6:1 gear ratio. I am very anxious to use them this season. One other reel I am currently looking at is the Diawa Saltiga 30. Nice size reel with power of it's larger competition.

Rods I have been very stubborn and set in my ways, so I have been using the St. Croix muskie rods. I like them and they haven't failed me yet. I am also a big fan of cork. However I am looking into the Lami Triflex series too.

To answer your question,.....I don't know what the perfect set up really is. I know what I use and like. Mabey if I listen to others and become willing to try new things I would. Hence this years new reel purchase. I love shopping for new gear almost as much as using it. It gets the adrenaline going.

One more thought.....You could also go this route, which is my prefered...

A 9' 10wt. GLX Crosscurrent with a Tibor Riptide QC reel. It's the only way to FLY

WOW

Thanks for the detailed responses, I knew I asked the right crew. To answer some questions posed to me.

Type of trips: I would say a split for bass with live bait and jigging

Area: some off Rhode Island, Conneticut and Jersey although i would love to get out to Montaulk

How many trips? dont exactly know but definately 5 or more (bass)

Type of boat: Mixed some party some private charter

Number of set ups:2

I am a tackle who, I admit it but i have no smaller tackle. I looked at teh avet LX and the price isnt bad. I also looked at accurate as i just purchased the 665 2 speed for tuna jigging and the 870 and 270 are sweet but expensive in comparasin to other manufactures.

I knew this would be a great post as there are obviously many techniques and opinions on the subject. I also have two brand new Quantum Cabo 60's that are great spinners as well but i always preffered conventional

Awesoem suggestions, thanks again
