Smile takin a shark home

ok so lets say you land a nice thresher or mako over 200 lbs and want to take it home. Do most people just cut it up in their boat since most marinas don't want 50 lbs of guts and a large carcass and don't have a big enough fillet table? On another topic what about weighing it in at a local dock with no tournament going on? I'm trying to figure out local docks that have this feature, I know capt. johns and snug harbor have it, I'm docked in the pawcatuck river.

Pretty much. We either do it on the boat or the dock. Take off the head and tail, gut it, remove the spine, then steak it out. It's actually not as involved as you would think. We can actually have most of that done before hitting the dock (though no monsters).

Most docks with scales will weigh you in, just remember to tip the guy running the hoist. I'm not in your area so I can't say who does or not.

try Ford's Lobster at the mouth of the Mystic River. Chris will weigh our fish and than let us gut it on the scale. Most of the time we'll do the steaking at my maria, but we've steaked larger fish at Ford's. Best way to tip Chris, is get fuel, bait, etc at his dock, but an extra $20, never hurts!!

I'll second a vote for Ford's. I frewuently stop their on the way out for fuel and bait (they open at 5:00 or 5:30 - four hours before my marina).

Very helpful and friendly folks. Somehow I missed the pawtucket in your post.

We do one of two things. We dont shark fish but with any tuna that comes back to the marina. We will either cut it up at montauk marine basin witch has the best fillet table around. They have a table thats at least 10 feet long with running salt water along with a dumpster to threw racks into. The other is contractor bags and zip ties.Toss it right into the dumpster. Thats what we mainly do. The owner said he would rather that than to get a call and have to fish a 200 lbs blue carcus out of the marina. Either way. They both work.
