Well I love it when a plan comes together. I headed out this morning from my new slip in Stage Harbor with a great group of guys for the first tuna trip of the season. We headed out east of Chatham loaded with the re-rigged squid bars and chains that the boys have been working on. Just like every first trip of the year, I got zero sleep last night and I was all jiggy. The ride down the sound and out the channel was fast and before I knew it we had lines out. Today would be fun because my son Capt. Corey was in the cockpit with my two new mates Will and Dave. Corey is going to fish with us for a couple of trips to help get my new team on track. Little did I know how well today would be for training. We set the 7 rod spread out and immediately got a bite on the short rigger with a grn/brown squid bar. Corey worked his magic but the fish missed it three times and went away. 5 mins. later we hooked up on the now famous “Keywest Special” rig and we were fighting our first bluefin of the season. My new mate Dave began clearing lines and I yelled down to him to stop reeling. I began to explain to him that we keep the lines out and try for the second or third bite. He looked up at me just as the squid bar that he was reeling in exploded and we were doubled up. I think he got my point. We pulled the hook on one of them and gaffed the other fish. It taped out at 55in and was fat. We then proceeded to get lots of bites and tagged and released another 5 fish, from 53-56 inches, with a few pesky bluefish thrown in just for fun. The bite slowed down and I thought what a great start to the season. Corey was on his game and each new mate had a chance to leader a few fish and learn about the tagging procedure. And then just like it always happens…. Crack… the left short rigger goes off. First the fish did nothing and then he started to tear off 250yds of line in one run. We cleared the other lines for this fish!! My angler was working hard but we had to spin and chase him down to get some line back. We spent another 15 mins. with the fish straight up and down. Corey looked up at me and said this fish was easily in the mid-60inch range. We worked hard and after 35 mins we had a nice fat 67 incher on the deck. Just a nice fish. We quickly tagged him, swam him and released him. Fish number 7 of the day and the biggest by far. The bite died so we called it a day and headed in. Just the way I wanted to start the season of 2008. I will be back out there in the morning. We have some openings this weekend and then we are busy next week. If you want to get in on this great June bite give us a call at 508-240-0778. Sleep will be easier tonight. Capt. Eric | ||
