The bite has finally re-started out East of Chatham today. The fog and weather has been brutal this past week. It’s like playing darts with a blind fold on. Tuesday we went 1 for 3 and I was thankful because a lot of boats never even got a bite. Wednesday was so flat and calm you couldn’t have trolled up anything. We spent 4 hours watching school after school of tuna swimming around on the surface and they wouldn’t touch a thing. Yesterday was some of the worst fog of this season with hand in front of face visibility for 12 hours. We trolled all day and got one bite. Tuna fishing is really tough when you can’t see. Today was a much better bite with lots of boats catching tuna. We hit the grounds early and found whales and bait and bass but no tuna. We had a big shark come up and attack our short corner rig-twice but thankfully he missed it and I still have my rig. We did get a tuna bite on the shotgun but we missed it. We never found much in the way of tuna and the fog lifted so I steamed way out east of the lanes and went looking. All I found was more dolphin and bait but no tuna. A friend of mine called and told me he had just caught his first tuna and then another boat called and told me they were tight. It was the slack and a bite was starting and I was 9 miles away. I spun the “Tammy Rose” and used every bit of her 850hp Cats and hammered back to the west. I rolled in and another buddy had just gaffed a nice fish. We slowed down and deployed the spread and with in 10 mins. we had a fish up on the left long rigger which we missed. Then another boat hooks up and I am being the spectator of tuna fishing which is not what I am good at. We missed another fish on the right long rigger and then another big fish comes up and jumps on the short left and we miss that one. Now I am at my wits end. The slack is on and this bite is not going to last and if we don’t get it done soon we’re going to miss our shot. I reminded my mates of the importance of getting the hook into the fish once we raise it and reminded them of the “Tammy Rose” mojo that they have been taught and how I expected them to hook the next fish. Then another boat hooks up and before I can say anything the right short rigger gets attacked by a fish and my mate Will is all over it and he gets the hook into him and then the right long goes off- we are doubled up!!! That is what I am talking about!!! Two nice fat fish at the transom in the 56 inch range, one gets the gaff the other one gets the tag. We are on the board. And then just as I feared, the slack was over and the bite died. Pulled that one out forsure. Lots of fish were caught today and hopefully this will continue. Remember what I have been saying all season, as these fish grow up, they will act more like giants every year. When you get your shots you have to make them count. Pulled a Bally Hoo way long for the first time this year and it swam unharmed for 4 hours, but I think it’s time to start that stuff. Hot color today was the rainbows but we got bites on pink and black too. This weekend is going to get busy out there with boats, but I hope we can get on the fish.
