The theme for the 2008 fishing season should be quality vs. quantity. We have had some awesome fish and some really good fights on the stand-up rods. The fishing out East has been very good for the past couple of weeks with the “Tammy Rose” catching fish on every charter. I have been saying all year and started saying it last winter at the seminars that these fish are going to start to act more like their big brothers and their behavior is changing. These fish are now biting more in the mornings, more on the slacks, and when they are not eating they are up swimming just under the surface “breezing” around. The big difference too is the length of the fight times with these fish. We are averaging 20-25 mins. with them so if the bite is only on for an hour or so you are only going to catch 3-4 fish on that bite cycle. These fish are not feeding all day like the young ones do. When the bite is on it’s good. And if you are there then you catch them. If you miss it, it turns into a very long day. Go early. Fish the slacks. Go big or go home. We had an awesome trip last Friday with a great group of guys. We had 3 nice fish to the boat with only three anglers onboard so the day was made. We had a mid day bite going on in front of us with some nice fish getting caught. I started to troll into that general area when the left long rigger exploded. A huge splash and the Penn 70VS started to scream. I watched as 200yds of mono left the reel followed by a 100yds of Dacron. Dacron! Yes sir we had a good one on. The first time I have seen Dacron all year. Considering we had just fought and released the 70 incher two days ago the fact that this fish had us into the Dacron left no doubt in my mind, this was a big fish!! The angler was a charterboat captain from Florida and to say he knew how to use a stand-up rod and harness would be an understatement. The guy kicked the crap out of the fish and we had him boatside in 35 mins. The long and the short of it is the fish was 75 inches long and around 250lbs. A really nice fish and an awesome job by the angler. That was a lot of fun. I will say my custom BFT rods with the Penn 70VS on it performed flawlessly and did exactly what I wanted them to do. That rod is so sweet!!! I made it with a Seeker Blank and it kicks ass! The other day I had a surface tuna show like I have never seen before. If I saw one fish I saw 10,000 fish up on the surface. It was amazing. We landed 6 big fat fish in the 56 to 60 inch range and had 12 bites total. The fish were up and going crazy and when the slack was done so were the fish. We did pull another fish from a pod of whales around noontime but the bite was over by 8:30am. Today we started in the wrong spot and had to make a move. We managed to find the fish and went 2 for 5 and had some awesome action. We pulled up into the fleet and I started to mark the fish. We doubled up and one of the fish cut the other one off and we were down to just the one fish. We got him to the boat and set back out and got another bite right away but we missed him. The weeds were bad so we had to keep cleaning the rigs and we got another bite and got this fish to the boat. We set back out and had a swing and a miss on the long shotgun. Great action and a lot of fun and that is what it is all about. Day 5 of the 6 day fishing week and I am spent of back to back to back ……etc. fishing but I will be back at it in the morning. There is no shortage of tuna fish out east, you just have to pay more attention to what is going on. Good luck and go get them. Oh, and Dan knows the color of the rig that I caught the 75 incher on. It is my best color for the past two years and no, it’s not black. We only have a few days left open in Sept. so if you would like to fish with us please call soon. We still have the Nantucket and Hyannis Tuna tournaments open so if you are interested please give us a call. Good luck. Capt. Eric | ||

| Eric, no kidding the weeds were bad! I got to the point that I lost all hope of hooking up with the fear of dragging weeds on my bars and not knowing it, and the task of constantly reeling in the spread to check for salad became daunting real fast. I managed 1 fish just to the outside of the zoo of boats. spent an hour and a half trolling the crab on the way back with 8 other boats that found massive amounts of bait and birds, but no fish seemed to be taken. The weather UNBEATABLE! see you next time Fred Lavitman "CHAISIN TAIL" | ||
