The Hook-Up! BlueFin Tuna fishing report.

Well fish fans the bite has been pretty good this week with some big fish around. Wed. we had a huge day with both the season high set for tuna landed and the biggest fish of the year. We hit the grounds east of Chatham, just as the sun came up over the horizon. Lines went in and fish on instantly. I had one of my best customers on board, Jorge, and he likes to charter the whole boat by himself. Billy and Corey were going to have some fun today. We started to catch some nice fish and my charter loves tuna so it didn't take us long to get him his 2 fish over 47 inches. With both fish tailroped and the spread back out the short rigger exploded and the Penn 70VS was screaming!!! Jorge looked at Corey and said this one was his. Well my son jumped into the harness and took up the battle. Corey knows how to fight fish so he was on him hard. The fish would not come up and we gave him some more heat and Corey finaly got him up. We all soon saw why this fish was staying deep, it was a fatty. We got the fish on the deck and he taped out at 59 inches. We tagged him and swam him and away he went. We caught a few more fish and had a couple of doubles that Billy got in on and then the short rigger again exploded and we knew right away this fish was much bigger than the 46-49 inch fish we had been seeing. Jorge stepped up and did some big-time battle with this fish. After about 20 mins we got our first glimpes of the fish and it was big. We got the fish on the deck and he taped out at 67 inches, our biggest of the year so far. Tagged and swam him and away he went. We caught a few more and then the long rigger with the now famous "Keywest Rig" exploded and started dumping line again. Corey's turn and soon we had another nice big fish up to the boat. This guy taped out at 60 inches. Tagged and released him too. We stopped fishing at 11:10 with our last release of the day. The totals were 19 fish caught and 23 bites including three sets of doubles all landed. Not a bad day at all. Yesterday we went 10 fish for 14 bites. A really good solid day but we didn't see one big fish. The bite this year seems to be alittle up and down. You crush'm one day and then you pick away the next day. The fish our moving around alot and the bait is everywhere. Got back to the dock and did my usually post game inspection of my engines and found a transmission oil leak. It looked like it was coming from an external fitting for the trolling valve so I did not fish today and stayed ashore to fix it. Corey and I went down and took it all apart and found out the fitting was loose so we re-sealed it and put it back together and we are all good once again. When you fish as hard as we do it is tuff to have to cancel but machines break down, and I know all about that!!!! Back out there in the am. Forcast for 15-20 knots NW winds..... The tuna love the NW winds... They will bite good.... I think.... I hope!?!? It's going to be rather "sporty" out there to say the least. Capt. Eric
