Thumbs down Tuna Fishing 8/17/08

Headed out today at 4 am with two friends out of newburyport for pigeon hill! Anchored up and caught some herring, put down all the sticks, and started to catch some cod and pollack on the side! Finally breaking in my shimano torium 30, my friends tried it got some nice cod from mid 20 pounds to low teens, i decided after cutting up some chum to cast my line again, hit the bottom and got an instant hook up with a decent pollack it felt like, got it about 30 feet from the top then instantly stopped, thought blue dog, so reeled as fast as i can to get this shark up and off quickly, got the mono to the reel, then there she is a big old tuna, looked to be a 400 pound plus fish, she looked up and then took off!! Knowing i only have 30 pound braid, and 40 pound mono, i thought it would just spool me!! Having 300 yards of braid, it ran and ran and ran, until about 150 feet then we went chasing her! She took out another 100 feet then stopped running, so reeling as much and as hard as i can got her turned and made up some line. An hour went by and i was absolutely smoked, but had to keep going and going, she made runs down, for the surface, every way she could, she was stubborn, now being an hour and a half, the braid was starting to run on its last legs, then getting to see the mono and almost have it on the rod. She made another run out to sea, taking the drag and pushing me to my limits, holding on she stopped, started cranking as much as possible, cranking, and cranking, then she ran towards the bow of the boat, and collected a ton of sea weed, which was great, being sarcastic as possible, got to see the mono again under the surface, and then she ran again, almost two hours in now, she stopped, so i started cranking again, then got more sea weed, so now i had about 10 extra pounds of sea weed on the line, got her close again, then the snap, the line broke, i went flying and she was gone!! Sad story but a good one, have some action shots but too tired to put up now, impressed with the shimano, just sad we couldn't get her!! I said a few choice words of course!!
