tuna lures?

now that we have the offshore bug and a few sharks under our belt we are thinking of trying trolling for bluefins.we have been trailering my boat to pt. judith to go sharking. last time we noticed a couple boats trolling back and forth in the same area.we figured they were catching tuna.all i have for gear are a few hex head type lures.we were going to give them a try until we hooked a thresher.i'm wondreing if say 2 of those type lures trolled would have worked?i know green machines behind birds are a good choice but does bird color or size matter.or green machine size?how about spreaders?we are looking for a low budget spread that will produce.also how fast do i troll?man , i guess we have a lot to learn.i fish a 23 ft center with 4 rod holders on the gunnels and rocket lauchers on the t top ,no out riggers.thanx in advance for any help that might be shared!

if you have outriggers... smaller squid spreads
work for us. check out reel draggin tackle. ken sells a 5 line spread for 105. quality stuff. just got them this season and have only fished them twice...like them a lot. last year we pulled whatever we had...cedar plug, hex head, feathers, clones and daisy chains we made up. they worked as well. point is give it a shot with what you have as you can catch with 4 lines out or lessons . these are mostly smaller fish and will hit the 5 and 7 inch squid readily. i'm hoping to be out sunday am from pt judith.

You don't need a lot

It just ends up that way

What the guys said, Cedar Plugs, a couple of Mexican Flag Zukers, some smaller green machines, jap feathers and what ever else you decide. Key is like everything else just find the fish and keep the faith. It does help after you have built some confidence in your lures and yes my friend I think bluefish are especially impoted to tear your stuff up.

The key is to keep it fun and over time you will become a lure collector like the rest of us but your "A" stuff will still see the majority of the water time

Yeh, I have some lures that just catch over and over, and I just keep re-rigging them, no matter how faded/beat up they get LOL.

Also, you do NOT have to spend a ton of dough on lures! I caught a Whitey in the dump on a cheapo no-name purple-feathered weighted-rubber-head 6" lure that I picked up for $5 at a local tackle shop. I had 2 of these running flat and they just run AWESOME flat....this Whitey knocked BOTH out of the clips and kept attacking both before I knew what the hell it was (was in the Dump, wasn't expecting Marlin lol)......he wouldn't let up till he hooked himself on one of them.

These same lures have caught tuna over and over.

Point is, it's not about the $$$ you spend on them, it's how do they run in your spread? You'll learn where certain lures run best, and at what speeds, and off what rods, etc. Concentrate on learning that once you pick up some stuff.

Some folks believe that bars are more of an antractant then an actual fish catcher and most bites come on chains and single baits. I personaly have caught most of my fish bars and very few on chain or single baits. This may be a location thing as i do most of my tuna fishing out east and some on the edge. In either case bars are somthing that need to be in a good spread to maximize your odds of raising fish..

Like most our spread started off small with chain and single baits but quickly grew into a full complement of Bars, chains, single baits and Meat..

Just so you know the only cure known for an offshore fishing adiction is death.. Oddly enough it is also the cure for the sleep depervation the afor mensioned adiction causes..
