This Sat we left our dock at 12 noon. We then ran 105 miles from my dock and started trolling in 68 degree water to the west of West atlantis. Tons of weeds and little life. Saw a few mahi jump at the highflyers, but none to take the bait. Our 3 hrs or so of trolling were fruitless. So, as the sun was setting we setup for the chunk on the drift. There were two head boats near us, one left as the sun went down, one stayed. A handful of sportfishing boats were within a few miles of us. We put a big diamond jig on the outrigger while we were setting up the bait rods. Before we finished setting up that rod went off. It felt like a nice sized tuna, but as I handed the rod over to a friend who's never caught a tuna and it fell off. So we started chunking. As it got dark, it wasnt long til the schools of squid showed up. We saw a few tiny mahi pop in and swim around the boat, but they wouldnt bite. Finally after a couple hrs of chunking we get our first bite, and a 13 lb mahi comes into the boat. Not long after another 12 lb mahi comes over. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Then it was slow again for a couple hrs. Finally, I hear the outrigger pop again, I'm all alone in the cockpit, as everybody is asleep, I yell fish on. My friend wakes up and just as he gets into cockpit, one of the bait rods goes off. A little pandemonium, but soon we have two tuna in the boat. Both are longfin, one 44 lbs and the other 43 lbs on the boga. What a mess, I think I need a bigger boat. ![]() We chunk like crazy to try to get the school to stay, but we end up with no more tuna bites. Maybe another hr later, I see one of our lines moving sideway. as i am trying to clear, what I think is a tangle, I finally see a rod bend. I pick it up and soon we have a baby swordfish in our hands for a pic, then released. ![]() ![]() The rest of the night was slow. Another gaffer size mahi swam around the boat eating our chunks, but refused my repeated attempts at a chunk with a hook in it. After he left, we had no more bites or fish. It had been calm all night, but as the sun came up so did the wind. As we were all tired, we skipped the morning troll and just decided to head home. We had a long run ahead of us. Forecast was a little off, and it was a painfully bumpy ride home at only 18 knots. Our normal 4 hr ride home became a 5.5 hr ride home. This is where I was really wanting a bigger boat. It sure was nice to finally get back to the dock. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ||
