How did everyone do this past year? I made the run but mostly stayied around p-town bluefin fishing.

From the Baltimore Canyon to the Norfolk Canyon: The year started great. We were taking more 100# class YellowFin Tuna than we have in a long time. The BlueFin Tuna bite was also better and longer than usual. Around late July it all dried up. By September we had to cancel a few trips so we didn't take clients for a $2k boat ride. Hope 2008 has as good a start and better ending.

The yellowfin bite was awesome this year, also landed a 267# BIGEYE
The first bigeye for me in about 15 years, most of the fish were caught
in THE TAILS. The albies were a little scarce this year,but did catch
are share. 7 months to go,sucks to wait that long, might have to head
south to get a tuna fix.

With memories of catching Allison's much less than 20 miles from Montauk & Block Island still fresh in my mind from the 70's & 80's. The Dump was the other hotspot for these fish while the Mudhole and spots much closer to BI held both abacore and bluefins galore.
It was very good this year at the Edge, and you'll do well fishing the canyons when the weather, bait, and tuna co-operate, but it's now a very long run for what we used to be able to do with grace and style at areas much closer to the beach.
My best YellowFin Tuna.. 208-lb. came from the 14600/43800 area in the mid-80's. Those days, sadly, are probably gone forever.

Why is that? Bait availability, water conditions/pollution.........why have the pelagics set new boundaries??? I recall a gentleman catching a YellowFin Tuna off Charlestown beach years back.

Thats a million dollar question. To catch yellowfin inside 50 miles in the
last 15 years has not been easy. When the bluefin regulations started
years back it forced us to target yellowfin . That changed everything,
Now you have to have a 20 knot+ boat that holds 400 gallons of fuel
to catch Tuna. Boats are running to Veach and Hydros and the Hudson
from montauk to catch tuna. The Tails and Atlantis is considered close!!
The SW &SE corners of the DUMP was the farthest you ever had to go,
and it was lock and load, bluefin and yellowfin mixed, What happened to
the fish i don't know. The days of running a profitable offshore business
must be impossible. How much can you charge and how much will customers
pay??? As far as someone catching a yellowfin off the beach it was
probably a bluefin, People see yellow finlets and think its a yellowfin.

I remember the Dump runs and having YellowFin Tuna all around the slick.

Capt. Bill might remember the Tuna story in the surf. The report I swear said YellowFin Tuna, but you are correct.........who knows I wasn't there to witness it, so very well could be BlueFin Tuna...........

Is there so much forage offshore that there is no need for YellowFin Tuna to move NNE???
