If you are trolling a spread and you see a fish take a swing and miss one of the bars grab that rod and jig it a few times. More often than not you'll hook up with that rod due to the increased action.

Tip# 2 When landing a sbft put a wet towel over it eyes as it is going nuts on the deck and it will mellow out and make the hook removal a lot easier and safer for both you and the fish.

Gin Clear water....line shy fish....

Don't laugh......

Ever have those instances when you have gin clear water, hungry fish, visible fish, etc.......but they just won't touch a bait with a line showing.....especially BFT??

Try taking a few gallons of milk next time you know the water is gonna be a lake, with water clarity to the bottom.....dump the milk after you get some marks in your slick, a bit at a time, to cloud the water a bit around the slick....it just may work like it has for me.....learned that one a looooong time ago.

Stretch your chum

Dry Dogfood and cheap macaroni can really stretch your chum situation when doing heavy sharking.... Both will absorb huge amounts of fishy oil and liquid, and are soft and easily churned into tiny bits....simply mix in with standard chum, and a bit of menhaden oil, and you got double or more chum for nickels more.....

Get your chum down where it belongs....

Try taking a portion of your chum, and mixing it into beach sand, to make nice bait mud balls, that sink down, dispersing the scent better at lower water levels.....the better angle of descent will get the fish closer to the stern, swimming up at your bait....perfect predatory situation. This can often get those distant slick hangers into the prime zone.

Some even mix glitter into the sand, to look like scales.....

great tips!! I have a few, there not great, but I'll offer them up.

Green, Green, green.

ya can't go wrong with green. There are many times when they will only hit green. Of coarse there are other times when they will only hit green. We?ve put out spreads with lots of color and always seem to end green, so now we just start green. Well you get my drift.

I'm not sure, but the green thing seems more pronounced in the NE canyons, really not sure.

My other tips are just as good!!

When around structure

Like some floating debris. Try shifting out of gear and letting the lures sink alittle, shift back in gear and the sudden movement of the lures might trigger a strike...

Make your own structure....

Take 5 or 6 sheets of newspaper, and lay them flat on the surface of the water, in areas where you have trolled mahi, but have no weed lines or pot balls on the edge.... or especially when you head off the 100 fathom line towards the deep up here. Do this many times in one area, mark your GPS, and come back after your troll session later in the day...... has to be light wind day, but the paper will eventually dissolve and not pollute, and you will find that sometimes not only a mahi has investigated......
