I have been having better success with keeping all lures in the spread balanced in size and color to simulate a bait ball. Not all identical, just similar. Don't mix 12" and 6" squid shells throughout the spread.

There are a few things that I have learned in past years. One would be temp brakes.The other thing to check out when there are no temp breaks out there and the water from the hudson to east atlantis is a constant 73 degrees. Cheek out a chlorophyll chart. That sometimes has bailed us out. I think one of the biggest things to success is fishing tuseday threw friday. There less pressure on the fish. Stay away from fleets of boats. If there are lots of boats in the area trolling 2 screws shut one motor down run it like a single screw downeast hull. If there is alot of squid in the area when chunking at night and they keep eating the snot out of your baits run a makerel they wont touch it. This past year we started to fish butter fly jigs. You want to find out what depth the fish are at quick drop one down. Half the fish chunking last year where caught on butterfly jigs. I started to fart around will ballyhoo last year. Learn to rig them run them in your spread along with atleast 2 spreader bars if not more. We run 4 baits off one outrigger. 2 spreader bars and 2 ballyhoo with islander rigs. One thing we do when its to snotty to go out we will hit the sound with 10 lines out and troll diffrent spreads to learn better ways to run the lures so when its nice out you can improve your odds of hooking up.These are a sample of little things that i have learned over the last few years that have helped us out. If you get a slow spell while sharking on the drift, take a moment and fire up an engine for 3-4 minutes, even going in-out of gear a few times (staying at idle). We've had more than one hookup right after shutting things down, figuring the noise and vibrations trigger a window-shopper to make the move!

Also for the sharkers, every half-hour we'll tear up small 2-3 sq/in pieces of paper towel and toss them into the slick to spice up the visual field.

When your having a bad day fishing I found something that always works.
This works when fishing for Fluke, Shark, Tuna, Striper any fish you are trying to catch. Dont get frustrated, slow down a little, sit back and look at where you are. The water, surf, beach, boats, friends, family. Take a cold beer from the cooler, open it, set back and injoy.

Don't be afraid to pull something so different and weird. Many itmes fish just seem to get boat shy..if you feel that's happening drop that shotgun back into a different zip code..Yeah it's a PIA to check but soemtimes it saves the day......

If it's slow just plain slow do sometihing like jig the spread...especially to the east of Chatham...seems they like to follow and follow and when you start to jig it you get tight...

When all else fails make the best sandwich you have ever consumed

Tip 1-Dont leave the dock in a bad mood,The fish can feel it and they will mess with you

You wussy inshore boys are outta your elements here ....This is for pelagic fishing ...no little itty bitty inshore flatfish or stripey tips will count !! Although I did like the two posts about beaching the boat and drinking, and never leaving the dock angry....good tips, I vote we let those 2 stay, but cut off any more of these sissy inshore tips for this post ....

AHem....Ken? Ruling? Cause if we can start throwing inshore tips out, I'm gonna be busy for a while.....

Okay, I guess I gotta throw a PELAGIC tip out there to make this post legit:

Try trolling cross current, as opposed to down or up, it changes the way the spread swims behind the boat, getting side swiped just like real bait would as if in the current. Often times this triggers hits, when the standard trolling up sea, down sea that many capts\. fall into for comfort on the vessel.....
