Not a tip or trick but probably more important than any other thing. Teach kids and young ones how to fish and respect the water and its bounty. Pass on the tradition and your knowledge so others may enjoy the pastime the same way we do. My father taught me and i will do the same to my daughter and her cousins.

Throw something at them

keep a spinning rod handy when trolling with a bucktail rigged up and ready to cast. Keep a small section of trailers for the bucktail nearby and if you have fish following the spread but not hitting take the boat out of gear and give a few casts - you might be very surprised.

I usually will have some squid strips, large black plastic eel type trailer, fresh minnow and the like handy.

You can go a lot with a bucktail on a spinning out fit - jig it, burn it, twitch it and swim it.

Game Plan

Always have a game plan in mind when you run offshore and stick with it unless conditions CLEARLY dictate otherwise. If you plan to troll a certain area do that and do not keep switching tactics unless there is a real good reason. The fish may turn on at any time and you will certainly miss that time if you deviate significantly from the plan

After sharpening your hooks with a file color them with a sharpie to prevent rusting and prolonging the hooks useful life.

Colored line

If you spend alot of time trolling, and are proficient at getting multiple hookups(which you should if you are paying attentionall the time ) you should seriously consider spooling your reels with multiple colors of line. This will help you distinguish the lines and help when fish crossover and you need to react quickly and accurately....

Use the birds

The real birds....If you see a lone frigate circling over one area, it may be a good chance he is following a billfish, as I have often seen this work especially well down south. You may see flocks of birds on your radar if you have it tuned in properly, and certainly when you see birds working an area rather than just sitting there is a likely chance that a feed is about to happen, or already has.

Whale breath

Any time you see pods of whales or dolphins, it is a good idea to troll alongside or through them, just be careful of not getting too close with the whales.

I have had some of my best trolling sessions in areas with heavy dolphin and whale presence.

Mono to straight wire

Instead of using the expensive 49 strand HD cable, try crimping a spro wind on barrel swivel to the main line with 400 pound mono to 220 single strand at the business end. A section of 5 feet of wire or so should be plenty....This allows you better control of the fish by not having to work with 10 plus feet that can't wind onto the reel, while still having the rod man able to dump line in a hurry effectively. The mono is unbelievably strong, and will cost far less to replace when it gets chaffed on the sandpaper hides of them toothy sharks....
