Today I had Jeff from Navionics, His Dad, and family friend on board. Our initial game plan was an early start out of Bourne to make some bait, and then fish the rocks for big bass. The plan went south when we hit two prime pogie spots and came up empty in both places. Plan B was to fish the deep rips and jig mixed bass and blues. We got on the rips and marked a foolish amount of fish, but could only muster 1 small bluefish out of the TONS and TONS of fish we were marking. I figured the tide was not pulling hard enough to make them feed so we went to Plan C to wait out the tide. I ran the guys over to the Elizabeth’s to throw plugs into the rocks for a shot at some bass while waiting out the tide. We wanted to get the attention of bigger fish so we went with BIG WOOD! I've been fortunate to have several top quality lure makers supply me with some OUTSTANDING plugs. Ocean Lures has been a staple for me this tuna season. While it has been great for me, it also got me some good-natured ribbing from my buddy Salty. He would tell me that fish like wood and I need to start chucking more timber. So today I went into the BIG WOOD box and broke out some serious timber to attract the big bass. I have to say "WOOD IS GOOD!" The guys began to work the shoreline with LONG casts that put the wood in the rocks and kept my boat out of them. It wasn't long before the bass began smashing the big Salty's Sea-Gars. The first few fish were around 30", but then after a big cast into the rocks and about half way back to the boat the Sea-Gar got CRUSHED!!! A HUGE body appeared and the Sea-Gar disappeared. The fish made a long run for the rocks but we got him turned and back out into the deeper water where he couldn't chafe us off. After a few minutes and a lap around the boat I reached over the gunnel and landed a monster of a bass. The fish was 47" and weighed in at just over 40#!!! It was the biggest bass that he had ever landed, and he did it on a popper to boot! After some pics and congratulations we went back to fishing. The guys were pumped and they worked the water hard trying to get another big bass. Smaller fish came every few casts, until about 30 minutes later Jeff fires a Sea-Gar into the boulders and the water explodes! We all saw the take and this fish was BIG. The drags giving up braid as the big tail moves a ton of water. The fish thrashed on top throwing white water all over. Jeff works the fish like a pro and gets it near the gunnel. I can see the fish is only lightly hooked and I have to control this beast. I manage to get a hold of the fish and get it into the boat. It’s a SLOB! The fish tapes out at 48" and a whopping 45#!!!! It's the largest bass a customer has landed on any of my charters and once again it was landed on a popper!!! ![]() We took a few pics of the fish and then Jeff gave me the nod to release it. It was his biggest bass ever and he wanted to let it get even larger. So I put the boat in gear and had Jeff steer us towards open water while I lay on the splash well and revived the fish. It took a few minutes for the old girl to get her wind back but soon I couldn’t hold her and she thrashed away and darted towards the safety of the rocks below. We worked the area for another hour or so landed a bunch of fish from 8-20# but we could not work up another so eventually we called it a great day and headed home. Final tally for the day several dozen fish anchored by a pair of big bass that weighed a combined 85#!!! Both guys landed their biggest bass ever, and they did it on top water lures. You just can't get any more exciting than having a 40+ pound bass come up and just explode on a surface lure in 10' of water. The lure of choice today was Salty Lure's 2.5 oz Sea-Gar in Silver and Olive and Silver and Black. The bass were feeding on those 5-6" mullet looking minnows and would occasionally smash them out of the water. The Sea-Gars were a dead ringer for the size, shape and commotion of the bait. Overall just an awesome day OTW with three great guys. We had a dubious start to the day and had to go to Plan C to get the job done, but we did get it done.....and we PUT THE WOOD TO THEM!!!!

| Nice job on the stripers. It's a blast when they are banging them. Are you affiliated with Salty products? Last edited by Possum; 10-09-2007 at 06:55 AM. Reason: I need to keep my mouth shut. Dang. | ||

Sort of, Kind of, but Not Really. Scott and I were friends before Salty's lures ever existed. When he began making pugs he hooked me up with some and asked me to try/test them. Ever since I've been using his stuff and having great luck with it. I get a gift box now and again, but I do buy my plugs as well. On the other side of the coin; with sports on the boat paying me good money to put them on fish, if the plugs were not what I thought were the best option for my customers to land fish of a lifetime, I woud not use them. Cheap / Free gear is nice, but not if it negativly affects my fishing or that of my customers. I use only what works (for me) if if fails me, its gets changed or replaced. At $1000 per day second best is NOT an option.
