As I drive down Stony Lane to head to the marina, my cell phone beeps with a text message…….”BIG TOGS!!” (Brian sent it……whacko……as he is on his way to the marina also). ![]() Today was going to be a good day. It’s HALLOWEEN!!! Eric Seabury (myself), Cappy Clif Seabury, Brian Droney, Scott Clay, Jared Elwell….and Don Coyne from ABC 6 News - Sports. Don films his own fishing show on COX Cable “Fishing the Ocean State” (www.fishingtheoceanstate.com). ![]() Our goal today was to show Don a good time and get some great footage for a Tog show……and, of course have a great fishing trip to boot! ![]() I head out the channel on “Inheritance” at 0600, and steam across the bay towards the lights of Newport. Down the east passage and out to a spot off Newport. Powdered donuts, pop tarts, coffee….all the good stuff. Don gets some shots of the orange sky over the Newport Bridge as we approach. At our spot, I find our structure, mark fish, and make the first attempt to get on the hook……..we put lines in and I was on right away. Then one after another we start hooking up and pulling over togs. We had a couple 8 to 9 #ers already and some nice 5’s and 6’s filling the box. Don was getting good footage and we were having a blast! Wound up not moving the whole trip. ![]() Of course Cappy Clif was pulling his usual quiet fish-haul in the front corner any time the rest of us were in a lull, but we were all hauling over nice fish…….but I must mention that Jared holds the trophy for the smallest/most choggies ….”posterior-hooked” of course! ![]() OK, so then Brian hooks into a solid fish. Not a brutal fight at first, but a solid fish. I’m working a bite, and Cappy Clif has the net ready…….then we see the fish appear. Both me and dad say “there’s a LOT of white down there”. The fish surfaces, turns, and dives straight down. Clif says “that could be a record fish!” Brian brings it back up, and heads it straight for the net! Over the rail comes a SLOB! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I get my digital scale and it’s bouncing between 15 and 17# in the SW swell, so I told Brian I would guess 16#, but we’d get an accurate weight at the dock. WHAT A SLOB!!!!!! Brian was shaking for ½ hour after and couldn’t even fish! We were all STOKED now! ![]() Back to the fishing, we had more good bites up until about 45 minutes before high tide (0944). At that point we picked some togs slowly, with scup mixed in. It was a slower rest of the trip, but for the next few hours we had a slow but consistent bite, with the occasional 2-3 fish at a time flurry. All fish were being bled, and filling up the 150Qt Igloo. We finally got Don Coyne on a rod and got him on the board with a nice 18” fish, which went back for good MOJO. We threw back a LOT of keepers today, simply due to the quantity and decent sizes we were getting. By 1300, we slowly, one by one, started voluntarily hanging our rods back up in the holders. It had gotten pretty snotty, we had torn thru 5 gallons of crabs and were down to the last few rejects, and we had a cooler full of togs! So, out came the washdown hose, and Cappy Clif started hauling the windlass. Today turned out to be a trip we couldn’t have imagined. Don got some great footage, Brian caught his lifetime best tog, and we all got to rag on each other as much as we wanted! Oh, and Scott provided the BUD LIGHTs, which, I believe he cracked at 0830 (we followed closely!). If I remember right, after Brian asked him how they taste at 0830, Scott replied that they taste the same at 0830 as they do at 1700! ![]() Many of us had never met each other, in different ways, but we all had a blast, caught LOTS of togs, got great show footage, filled the cooler…….and enjoyed great weather, even with the afternoon blow. Heading in, we discuss what to do with the “BIG TOG”. I convince Brian to bring the tog to Quaker Lane Tackle (certified scale) for weigh-in. My brother Dave informed us earlier by Nextel that the RISAA hall of fame tog was ~14.3#, and I knew it would top that! On the way in, with a beam sea, the cooler weighed so damn much full of togs, that, even tied down both sides, it shifted and tore the side hahahaha! Hey, 6 full years of use, having extreme mileage put on it.....I can't complain! Some duct tape wrapped around will get me through the rest of the season (at least haha)! Back at the dock (1400), we get all the fish filleted, the boat cleaned, pics taken, etc. FINAL TALLY: 41 Tautog ![]() 1 Seabass ![]() 6 Big Smiles ![]() We would have limited out and then some if we hadn’t thrown back so many keepers. But Brian was giving us all dirty looks earlier, knowing we had to fillet back at the dock! I think the dirty looks had more to do with us asking how he broke the bed on Scotty’s Henriques on one of the last canyon trips! ![]() ![]() ![]() When we leave the marina, Cappy Clif, Brian and I all head up to Quaker Lane. Steve McKenna is working and when he sees the tog, says its got to be the biggest tog he has ever weighed! On the scale it goes, and it hits 16.300#! A new RISAA Hall of Fame fish, and only ~5# shy of the RI State Record set in 1954! Did I use the word SLOB earlier at all???? Brian fills out all the necessary paperwork and sends me home with the fish to cut it up tomorrow. We took the specs to have a fiberglass mount made later: 16.300 lbs 28.5 inches long 21 inches girth I run into my neighbor a bit later, who works for RIDEM as the captain of the John H. Chaffee research vessel. He says it looks like a female and that, if he was correct, it was likely bigger by far than any other female tog they have ever run across! He wants the head for his researchers to study, and is going to get back to me on what they find out! Very cool to be able to participate in research with this specimen! So, tomorrow, “she” gets carved up into (very large) fillets and the head goes to the researchers. Brian will likely get a State plaque for fish of the year, a RISAA plaque for hall of fame tog, and maybe even one for year long tournament. Another successful trip, with lots of happy faces! Great to have you all aboard “Inheritance”! Can’t wait to see Don Coyne’s show once he processes the footage! And you ALL have an open invitation on “Inheritance”! I’m sure I’m missing some details, so I will leave it up to the rest of the crew to chime in! Here are some pics for now!
