7/29/08 Westbrook to OldSaybrook.

Fished 6pm till 10pm last night. Last few hours of incoming and thru the tide change. 3 wayed eels over very isolated rock piles. Basically, I fished lobster pots last night. I was looking for those sharp humps in 50-60 feet of water that quickly go up 10 to 15 feet and right back down. Usually drift lenth is 150 feet.We got one fat 32 incher. Strange night. Marked lots of bait. No blue fish- no nothing. I have been struggling these last few weeks. No real fish to speak of.Highlights of the night:One huge fish breach the surface.Wish i had seen it.GPS info:Total distance traveled: 11.7 miles ( Farthest I was from the dock approx 3 miles)Max speed 34.3mphAve speed 3.3 mphPG

Most of the rockpiles around Westbrook have been slow for me also. Thanks for the report

It is the summer lull. Like everything else it will pass. The CT DEP just closed down my commercial scupping, so it looks like I am going to become a recreational fisherman till September 1, when they reopen the scup season. I have been doing way too much commercial stuff anyway and knocking myself out for $$$. In a way, it will feel good to get out the old chunking rod, bucktails, and live eels once again. Latimers Reef, here I come!

Thanks for the heads up with the bunker, i was going to stop in branford for bunker last night before heading out to faulkners. Instead i read your post, saved some time and got my bait in guilford. My girlfriend and I got one 43" striper on a live bunker.

Start 3 waying fresh bunker. they dont have to be live. The fish size will increase and so will the numbers of them.

We have had some banner mornings in that area the last couple of weeks

I have never tried 3 waying bunker.
Same technique as eels?

when 3 waying bunker, how much lead would one typically use.(basically, do you want to be directly on the bottom or do you usually fish different depths of the water column.)

For the west brook area I use 16 oz. you can get away with less if you use braid.

Its the same as eels. drop it to the bottom and take a couple of cranks up. as you go us the reef you will have to get a couple of more cranks.

The bass will inhale a bunker just like an eel.
for a live bunker hook it thru the nose and for a dead bunker hook it thru the bottom jaw and thru the top jaw so the mouth stays shut

here is Philly doug with one he caught with the bunker still in its mouth
