7/5 Albatross Fluke Report

Left from Apponaug Harbor yesterday morning at 0600 after fueling and baiting up with my father-n-law Maynard Horton.

The plan was to run down the bay and try for some Bass and then hopefully hit some fluke. Got some good intel from Eric from Saturday so I was pretty confident that I could at least get the old man into a little action…

So we made the run and it became obvious that the 0400 NOAA (No One Analyzes Accurately) updated forecast that was calling for 5 knot SW winds and 1 foot or less, was a nice 10-15 dead West wind with an annoying 2 foot Bay chop already building….

We arrived at BeaverTail and dropped some eels, but the weather and moon tide had the drift at almost 2 knots. I tried to get on the troll with the tube n worm for a little and did mark some fish but never got a hit.

Decided to give fluking a try and the first stop was Austin Hollow. Got Maynard rigged up with 10 ounces of lead and sent his rod to the bottom….30 seconds later I look over and his rod is jammed over and he shouts…"I got one"…he carefully hauled it up, and it turned out to be a 26 inch slab that would be our biggest fish of the day. He was pumped!

We worked that area for about another hour or so and grabbed a few other sub-legal fish before the SCUP made their invasion and started stealing every bait that got sent down. WTF are scup doing in 70 feet of water with an open sandy bottom I wondered?

We ended up moving because of them and the drift being so hard to keep up with. Next stop was the Jamestown Bridge. I noticed a few guys making a short drift in 25-35 feet of water and catching some fish so I joined the party. We ended up putting a nice little catch together with 2 25 inchers, 2 24’s and 2 other fish that were about 22 inches. A few shorts but not many….

All fish were caught with 1 ounce Spro jigs on dropper loops with whole small squids and 10 ounces of weight. Tide was ebbing all morning. Water temp was 65 at the Bay Mouth and 68 degrees at the Bridge.

Few pics below….Good luck everyone!!

I left Allen's harbor a little later (~0830) and was expecting the 5kt winds that were predicted. Found it a little different when getting on the water. First choice was Austin Hollow but I wanted to hug close on a western shore so I headed to the Newport bridge. Hugged in tight and with the tide ripping out and the West wind we put some nice drifts together. Missed a fish on the first drift and picked up a 23" on the second. Talked to Albatross and he was moving into the Jamestown bridge. Fished the next few hours picking up fish from 17 - 20" and a lone scup. Thing hit like a freight train. Then my son Luke picked up a 21" keeper on the last drift. I was getting the gut hook out when Albatross called to tell me about the fish over at the other bridge. We headed back in with the howling West wind at 1200. Not a bad day but only 2 keepers.

4oz Spro Jig 3-wayed on a Thom Cat Big Pink rig with squid on both worked pretty well.

I have one picture on my phone but haven't taken it off yet. Maybe tonight.

I think I saw you coming in around 5 maybe on Saturday, you headed to the left of the preferred channel marker??? I tried hailing you but no luck. We went in to the launch and then hit up some of the restuarants in Pt. Jude. Got all boozed up and slept in the truck, didn't want to drive! The GF wasn't too happy about that one! We got two short fluke and a bunch of short porgies for our efforts. Good job those of you who are managing some keeepers...
