Shoot me a PM or post here the set up and technique you used. I have been trying to get my 8 and 9 year old boy on their first solo tuna. With real light drags, and some aggressive boat handling I am sure I can pull it off. But any tips from someone who has already done it would certainly help. Mike

| When they get to around 11 you can strap them to the boat via safety teather, strap them in a bucket harness and let them do battle. LOL Thats the exact picture below fitting the description above Anthony's first fish was a 30lb striper at age 8, he didn't tangle with tuna until around 10. On his first tuna we went the other direction ...heavy drag on a 50w, aggressive boat handling, longer gaff shot 75# tuna on the deck. He also fought one with 30w but the fight went on forever. Kids arms aren't built for long extended battles on rods made for adults |

So I had some 8 inch butt rods made with some good backbone and a soft forgiving tip. I'll take the wire reel off and slap on a tuna reel and away we go. Being an ex-rock climber, I was planning the safety harness. Good idea. I was going to go with lighter drag and a high capacity reel because of the intimidation factor. When the drag is too locked down my guys get a little unnerved.... even happens on spinning gear. The first thing they do whenever they touch a rod is back the drag way off... They are fairly adept at tightening the drag during the battle when they feel more comfortable. How much does Anthony weigh? He certainly looks like an 11 year old compared to my 8 and 9 year old... | Anthony weighs 100lbs right now, gameface gear makes the safety harness. the one Anthony has on is the mate saver, they also make the angler saver as well. When he is fishing with 25-30lbs of drag I need to make sure he stays in the boat Obviously because every person is built and acts different there isn't a perfect way. I have tried 3 different harnesses belts etc to finally get him the most comfortable setup. Lighter drag is fine, but if you don't have a custom rod it beats up their arms |

50 international VSWs 2 speeds in low gear on custom rods, with drag backed off , other lines cleared, boat in neutral and I'm behind him ready to grab his life jacket , just in case ! He's 9 now, @ 7, I had him out on Wildcat jiggin up 20lb cod from 350 ft of water. He fished with us (Team Ave Maria) in Dennis this past weekend. Friday, we pre fished and had all the slot fish we could want. Sat, the fish moved, we could only manage 1 slot fish, caught by him, vertically jiggin a Slug-Go on light spinning gear!
