Yes a gaff for bass is illegal in CT - and you can't spear fish for them in CT. I think it all has to do with people gaffing fish and then realizing its not a keeper. While improbable it could happen. If you have a trophy bass in CT and it would not fit in the net I could argue a CO might look the other way if you got inspected and the fish had a gaff hole in it.

I have seen people gaff little tog which is just plain "dumb". There might be a bad story around this regulation in CT.

Overall netting fish results in much better table fare. The gaff does make mess of a nice shoulder section of meat if the gaff lands in that area. If your really good gaffing a bass inside the mouth works great (but not in CT). Offshore a whole other story where the gaff is really needed.

When I was selling bass, the dealers did not like gaff holes and I hate big nets. They take up too much room and get tangled in the hooks.

I made a gaff out of an old ski pole and a 9/0 siwash hook. I epoxied the hook on the end after cutting the point off the pole. I can be very selective as to where I place the hook and the hole is so small it goes undetected. Sharp as a bugger too. Wherever I touch the fish, that hook is in.

It's as light as a feather, 4' long and stores easily just about anywhere.

Is it legal to gaff stripers in Mass? I always thought it was not.
