Blues

Was out by the D/L buoy this morning (9/13/07) at Latimer's reef. Scup were everywhere in mixed sizes. Plenty of shorts, but if you fish through them you should catch your limit. Black sea bass are there in good numbers, but you really need some luck to hook onto a keeper. Keeper sized Black sea bass are few and far between. Blues were scattered and working the area for most of the morning. The Blues just kept tempting me until I finally had to up anchor and go after them. They were mixed in size as well, with the average size being around 6 pounds. Remember, most inshore fishing reports remain valid for a period of time, but not for blues. Fifteen minutes after they have been tearing up an area, they could be miles away. The incoming tides this week are picking up because of the phase of the moon, so be careful of the rip if you are trying to anchor there in a small boat. Fresh Squid works better for bottom fishing in a fast rip than fresh sea clams. The clams are great after the currents slow down a bit. Also remember that the D/L buoy is actually in NY waters and you have to be a few hundred feet North of the buoy to be in CT waters. CT DEP is bad enough, however, you really do not want to tangle with the NY DEP. They have, and will, confiscate your tackle besides giving you a summons that will require payment on the spot, for any fishing violation.
