| Did not try for squid last night as I believed and took Capt Dom's advice. Based on Dom's past posts, when it comes to the where-a-bouts of our own local fish species, for me, it is like hearing the words of the man upstairs. I did check with the Stonington wholesalers and the boats have not been coming in with squid, no surprise. This does not mean they are not catching them as you read this, as there is a boat out there right now, due back Saturday, that could have gotten into them. However, be aware that the long legs of a commerical dragger means that what they are, or not, catching would be almost useless information to the members of this form. Should the boat come in loaded with squid this Saturday, it would just mean that the squid are out there somewhere which could translate into very distant grounds. Information from our own local charter captains is far more pertinent. I did toss out a bait trap last night to see if things are coming back to life in our own local coves. Was pleasantly surprised this morning when the trap was loaded with small semi-useless killies (they will grow), a couple of very useful larger killies, one skinny grass shrimp, a small crab, and my first eel of the season. Things are starting to come alive and it definitely perked up my spirits. My wife accredited my improved disposition to the fact I attended church this morning (holy day of obligation). Little did she know what was drifting through my mind as I looked out over the beautiful expanse of Fisher's Island Sound from the vantage point of a pew at the Ender's Island Monastery. Visions of a large bass taking my solitary eel danced through my head. It will not be very long now!

| Well, Scup they are around ![]() We saw them, and a good amount. Just have to figure out how to get them to eat..... Tomorrow night we'll have a little more arsenal.. The snapper blues didn't help, and I just hope the amount of blues/bass around doesn't screw up the run this year. Last year we didn't get the snapper blues in the "bait slick" until late May. It really spooks the squid for obvious reasons. Last year one of the asians on the bridge pulled a scholie bass in on a squid jig LOL. Someone else pulled in a large fluke. We'll be there tomorrow night, and, if Sunday's Cod trip gets blown out, I'll be there Saturday night too.

| I have heard about a commerical guy, in years past, getting large amounts squid in nets. I was told he was not a dragger, however, I have seen a boat rigged for small dragging operations that could not have been more than 22 feet. A non-fisherman friend of mine used to buy around forty pounds at a shot from him as one year we split it up 50/50. Do not know what type of net he used but I suspect it he would set it out and then retrieve it at a later time. Have not heard anything about him in years. He used to operate out of the Niantic CT area. Just curious if any of our charter boat captains who might have been commercial in their younger days could guess at what type of net could nail large amounts of squid. I just cannot picture a gill net doing any damage due to the fact, no gills, and large mandated mesh size. After seeing squid move when they have to, I suspect a cast net might not be fast enough either although I could be wrong about that. I have seen the ruckus made by feeding blues and bass in just eight feet water when every fish brought aboard coughed up squid all over the place. Squid will move into the shallows so they should be vulnerable to nets. When there is a good Spring run of squid in my area, they hold the large transiting bass for several days. A few years ago, this happened at Latimer's Reef, right at the D/L buoy. Every cast with a bucktail would be a hook up. Did not see much happening on the surface but all hell was breaking out below. Two days later, the action and squid move in closer more toward the Monastery. Same type of results as at the D/L buoy except this time the shallower water was boiling with surface action. Wish you guys good fortune going for these critters this weekend, but the predicted weather just might dampen down your efforts.

| Definitely with the boat. I launch at FT. Adams. It's a quick hop over to the bridge area, or really wherever I want to fish. Last week I was fishing in 24 feet and saw a bunch on the finder. Only caught 5 though. My boat is the Rivah Runnah if you end up coming on Saturday. I'll be with wifey, she's going to love the rain! She keeps telling me she wants green water over the bow, etc. so I'll see if I can get her to crack! | ||
