Hey On The Edge,

There's plenty of room on the bridge If they'll turn on hot and heavy you guys should come down, we can hook up!

I've been doing it from land last few years. Used to do it from the boat YEARS ago with round headlights mounted to plywood and hooked to car batteries, on a pole, stuck in the rodholder

I admittedly never tried it from land until a few years ago! Kinda nice to walk back to your car and go home whenever you're done......that's one good thing.....

Well, I'll be there tonite....not sure about tomorrow night yet....

Once it turns on, I'll let you guys know. Right now, with the crappy weather and whatnot, it's not worth it unless you guys are sick-in-the-head like some of us are LOL!

Slow pickins again, but there were a few spurts where you'd see a bunch coming over the rails. Where we were, you could feel them playing with the jig when they came thru......touching it, dropping it, etc. Lost a bunch on the way up or at the surface. They were very touchy still but better than the other night.

It's early, it'll bust open soon.

I got a nice meal's worth

Just Curious!

Assuming a banner night arrives and you really get into the squid hot and heavy, roughly speaking and using a five gallon pail as a gage, how long will it take one man to fill the bucket? I am assuming the bucket will hold somewhere around 25 pounds.

Last year a buddy and I filled a 4-Gallon bucket each in a couple hours.

74,

I do not think I will ever dance to the tune of "Catch a Squid" but being an electrical engineer and a tinkerer, you have gotten my mind into low gear. These underwater lights (requiring a car battery) that have been mentioned earlier, are they to illuminate the area in general so you can see the squid or are they an attractor (or both?) Where I am headed is I had purchased a bunch of high intensity LED's to illuminate my pot buoys to prevent boaters from running into them at night but decided reflective tape would be less of a fuss. Thinking along the lines of small battery pack with one or more LED's in a sealed weighted jar. After looking at these China squid jigs it would be simple enough to attach a small LED clear container with batteries above the jig if the only function is that of being an attractor. Do not think it would be difficult to build a light directly into the jig itself. LED's are now dirt cheap (I know the price of LED devices sold does not reflect that but the LEDs themselves have drop drastically in price,) and they come not only in various levels of brightness but colors as well. In fact, single LEDs are available that go through a timed sequence of several colors have now hit the electronic surplus markets. Always thinking of a potential winter project to bide my time away but do not have a clue as to what is needed. My last brain storm of putting a lighted attractor in a lobster pot was a total disaster as all it did was attract enormous quantities of spider crabs. Checked with the Stonington wholesalers today, boats are still coming in with zero squid.

Stonington Squid Report

The things I do for this form! After 5:30 PM Mass at Saint Marys today, I walked over to the Stonington Commercial dock to check out the squid situation. I was a civilian, no jigs, no rod, no light, and in church going clothes. Spoke with a sole angler who had just started squidding. At 7 PM three anglers of Asian ethnicity showed up. Of the four fishing I saw nothing caught in fifteen minutes. However, the back side of Gambardella's building had several fresh ink splats on it likely made the night before as sloppy anglers allowed their prey to slam into the building. The lone angler informed me that they were into them heavily on May 8, of last year. He also stated that when they are running good, it is arm to arm anglers. Apparently there is a very strong Asian contingency in the area that swarm to the dock by cell phone notification at the first sign of action. Even more amazing to me, it was lamented that inconsiderate anglers last year had actually tied into Gambardella's 120 volt exterior outlet to power their lights. Do not count on it being energized this year as I will make sure this petty thievery ceases. While I know the members of this form are good guys, I was stunned as to how low in character and values other anglers can be.

Quick report from last night/this morning .........

We had the generator and 1000W of lights, plus the 2 lanterns this time. Wheelbarrow and all LOL. Slow pickins again, very picky as hell! They would do a lot of "touch and drop".

I managed 2 meals worth, but that's about it.

Was east wind, but very comfortable until real late when it started blowing and drizzling. Got raw.

Started around 8 PM, and packed up when the generator ran out of gas and the lights went black on us LOL....was 2:30 AM.

Saw Dom heading south under the bridge and yelled to him. Either had a squid charter or a bunch of guys just out fishing.

We just got back from Newport. Went out around 1 this afternoon from Wickford. Checked the traps I got from Dom, again a ton of spider crabs. Can you use spider crabs for anything? Chum mix? Moved the traps to a new spot. Tried for a fluke bite west of beavertail then off Newport oceandrive areas..nada...switched to Tog in the bay, had some fun with them. Never really fished for them rod and reel...always used a spear as they make good target practice. I'm chewing my last bite of dinner now..tasty little bastard he was. Only one male and a bunch of females. Just kept the one.

We then tried for squid at sunset for about 1 1/2 hours anchored up by the bridge. Saw another boat bring in a few. Then a small boat with two Asain guys anchored next to us. Watched them bring quite a few in. Oh Asian squid master show me the way! We didn't get squat.

Glad the day turned out nice and it was great to be out getting some dinner
