[quote=MailleMarine;49467] Can you use spider crabs for anything?
If you ever find out a commerical use for spider crabs, let me know as I will become a millionaire. You are probably dropping your pots in an area that is shallow and with little current. If the lobsters are there, then fine, but otherwise you are going to go through an awful large amount of bait to no avail. The thumbnail shows a tool I use to quickly remove obstinate spider crabs from my light gage scup pots. Ripping them out by force bends the hell out of my wire pots. It is a Fiskars model 7921 stainless anvil pruner. It has a place where you can attach a small float to it. Do not know about you, but I must have dropped mine, along with my gage, at least a dozen times over the side but have yet to lose either because of the float. Just be careful and do not clip your pot wires by accident. It will not do the pruners any good either.

74, 1000 watts of power, unbelievable! What are you trying to do, light up Newport! Next, you will be telling me that you are using halogen lighting as well. Here I was thinking a small LED light was all you would ever need. Still not crazy about going after squid one on one, but now this NBS form has gotten me curious as to the why this method of fishing is so addictive. I just might have to visit the Stonington commercial dock this evening and give it try myself. For what it is worth, I went on the web to look up squidding jigs and discovered others have come up with the idea of using internal LED lighted jigs. In addition, there is quite an assortment of lights that one can attach ones line. Another one of my brilliant brainstorm ideas down the drain!

I managed 2 meals worth, but that's about it.

Was east wind, but very comfortable until real late when it started blowing and drizzling. Got raw.

Started around 8 PM, and packed up when the generator ran out of gas and the lights went black on us LOL....was 2:30 AM.

Saw Dom heading south under the bridge and yelled to him. Either had a squid charter or a bunch of guys just out fishing.

HEY ERIC,
NOW I KNOW WHAT THAT BRIGHT GLOW WAS OVER THAT
WAY KEPT ME UP ALL NIGHT

Formula, where were you guys? I was there till 12:00 am Saturday. 14 squid total. Not bad, some big ones around too. Had a lot drop off before I could "set the hook"! I saw some asian guys just hammering the squid. I couldn't get 1 in the time they got 10. I got really frustrated and moved the boat, which turned out to be a good move.

I was with my girlfriend in a 17' Wahoo. I didn't see any boats fishing like the one in your pic. We anchored up for a while along the highway bridge/causeway where all the other boats were fishing. I didn't do to well there so I moved to over by the big barge that says NO WAKE. We did much better there.

Just got back from the Stonington Commercial dock. Arrived at 8 pm. About a dozen fishermen were squidding. Several propane lanterns, two generators, and very poor action. Most, like myself caught naught, one Asian landed three or four but I did not see more than a total of 6 squid landed within one and half hours I was there. Very pleasant evening and a nice chat with a co-angler; would have stayed longer but Scup's worn out internal plumbing dictated otherwise. Still am not convinced that buying the squid would not be far more cost effective. The angler I was chatting with informed me that one day last week an angler left with 1/2 bucket of squid. The halogen lights drew several species of bait to the surface. Pretty sure the main body was grass shrimp, with what appeared to be Spearing working just below the shrimp. While I do not know exactly what they are, there were plenty of worm like creatures with red heads swimming about. I have caught these swimming worms previously in a dip net, but have no idea of what they will ever grow up into. Very fragile and will break apart in your fingers. All in all, I would consider tonights visit to the dock pleasant, but totally unproductive.

We weren't in the Fortier.

As you came up on the bridge going north, did you see some real bright lights on your right? LOL

74, that's cool that you saw us! I'm still not sure which boat you guys were in. I saw a few boats with pretty bright lights. Oh well. When are you going back out? Some of the squid we got were pretty big. I've been eating 3 nights in a row now and still have alot left, and that is from only 14 squid on Saturday...

What kind of boat were you in? Where do you guys launch from? I put in at Ft. Adams. I use that boat for everything. I love it. Took it to Block from Stonington a few times last year spearfishing.
