Usually there is a spring run starting just about now, but after everybody did so poorly last year, I have gotten complacent in doing anything until the weather gets a bit more comfortable. It would not take much for me to head out with six or so pots. As far as squid goes, it just seems too brutal for me to go one on one with the Asians. I have yet to catch a single squid this year! I think I now understand why many head out for the squid in boats. When you are in a boat, you just cannot be mugged by fishing rod yielding pedestrians. The trawlers have yet to switch to their fine mesh nets, as they are still targeting flounder and some scup (that is what I have been told when I stopped by the wholesalers). It should not be long until they start to land squid although I have no idea what the wholesale price will be this year. Last year it reached $2 per pound, so I expect $3 per pound this year might be in the ball park considering sky high fuel costs.
Hey Scup,

I'm using 5 traps. When I first put them in I managed about 20 skate and a butt load of spider crabs. Obviously not a good area. I moved them to a new spot and have been doing better. Since the 6th I've had 11 in them, three keepers, two females with eggs, the rest short, a couple of claws, crabs, skate and channeled whelk. Really only a couple of spider crabs so that's a better start. It's all a learning curve for me since it's my first season. Hopefully I'll zero in on them and get enough for a few good dinners, certainly enjoyed the one's i've had. I'm planning to lengthen the warp on two of them and get them just a little deeper. I'll keep you posted though.

Well the 2 Steve's were together for a while and we didn't do much betterwith the squid for the extratime we put in. I did't catch you as I must have been to focused on the work at hand (or just plan frustrated!!).

Thinking about putting in the Thames for a few hours. Let you know what's going on there if anything. Nice day for a float.

Thanks MailleMarine,

So far you done a hell of a lot better than what I had done last year. However, that is not saying much. I think I am the world's worse lobsterman. I could not even figure them out when I had a commerical license and when they were plentiful. I love eating them, but wouldn't lose too much sleep over not having them when the Blue Claw Crabs are about.
If anyone wants to know if anything is happening at the Stonington Commercial dock regarding squid, reply to this post and I will wander over there to see what is happening.

Curious to know how you make out. Good luck and hope you kick some Asian Arse!!! ( Though there is nothing wrong being Asian)

I wish Newport was closer or thereports were more positive.

Dumped her into the Thames today because it was the nicest day in a while. PLayed with the new 997SI for the most part and marked alot of bait balls.

Would like to make it squiding once more but think thosetimes have passed till next year.

It was another funky night. Went with my buddy Mike and his 2 portagee cousins and Chris (Rover74) met us there as well.

Chris quickly pulled 2 up and I thought maybe it was going to turn on early! Nope.....couple other strays we pulled up......had squid all around us. BUT we also had large baitfish in the mix, I swear it was pogies. We saw them last time too. They spook the chit outta the squid and make them go down, etc. PITA

Anyway, we had a late sort-of-blitz that lasted 15 to 30 mins or so and we each pulled in a couple meals worth of squid. Saved the night I guess. Walked off the bridge after 1:30. In bed by 3. (Up at 6 LOL). And out late again tonite.......LOL.

Squidding time is zombie time

Anyway, I'll keep trying till they're gone! Newport Boat Show is this weekend, I'll be hitting that by day, maybe both days, I just got 4 tickets for free.

And Inheritance gets hauled to the marina Sat 8AM

Yeh I figured.......we saw 6 or 8 cop cars going up the bridge.......then blue lights (police boat) in the water, then the Coast Guard rescue helicopter came searching real low to the water along Goat Island and between there and the bridge.......I swear i may have heard another helicopter too, but I know some C-130's were drilling last night too.

Hey

Been a bit busy these past few weeks, been off the board for a bit.

I am back in newport after a very dissapointing squid run in Hyannis. I did manage to get in a weeks worth of charters, plus 4 night trips up there, so it was worth the effort.

The past few nights have seen marked improvement in the squid bite out of the boat. Had a bucket or better the past two trips, and I got a report that last night the bite was very good in the wee hours. Maybe tonight will be a good one. Out again tonight, no rest for the wicked or weary...

Will report back tommorrow, after I get some much needed sleep tommorrow, had a reschedule trip, first day off since April 30th

I am officially a squid zombie after the past few all night, all day excursions.
