I've never tried to throw on scup b4 but I would imagine you would have to herd them with the boat as the net sinks. This is also necessary with hickories. Think of the Humpback whale bubble net thing.

As far as nets, I would never buy a custom net for pogies (I do build my own 15' and 16'ers just because there are not production nets available in those sizes). Almost all of the import 6 panel nets with 1" sq mesh work fine on pogies. You must stay away from circular or "hoop " style construction nets. They simply are awful in the larger sizes. If the bait is around as thick as it was last year, I will be throwing a chinese made 10 or 12. I build very nice cast nets but I think it is a waste of my time to do such when the nets on the market work fine.

Shinerdunker,
Thanks for the info. I did a search on mullet cast nets, and came up with (Ricks Tackle Ahi USA Cast Nets Catalog) a 12 foot six panel mullet net, 1 inch mesh, 1.25 pounds of lead per foot, for under $100. It has to be imported at that price, but I will give it a try. I do not plan on trying to herd the scup as I fish alone. It would be too much for me to handle the net and engine at the same time. What I am planning to do is to chum the hell out of the area. Scup go crazy whenever there is a free feed offered. One commercial, hook and line, friend brags that all the other recreational boaters around him get reduced to nothing once he starts his chumming. While he is bragging of course, there is quite a bit of truth to his claims. He will put out several gallons of clam snot over the side in his over sized chum pot.

Who sells a decent gill net?
My neck is all messed up and the cast net is out of the question this year.

Include me on the PM. It might be a little to late for me as a 12 footer is in the mail, but would still like to know. I hope that some of the posts are right in that a larger cast is easier to throw. One way or another, I am going to find out. One could easily feel deficient in throwing a cast net when you worked with a couple of southern boys that know what they are about. When they showed me exactly what to do, I had no problem whatsoever. Since I had thought I had mastered everything, I stopped practicing. Bad mistake, as now I have forgotten exactly what they had taught me and to make matters worse, I have watch just too many film clips on how to throw cast nets. Everything is now a big muddle in my mind but since I have done it in the past, with practice, is should come back to me. No problem with small nets, but I do choke when over fish.
