    Hard fishing!

Yesterday was going to be an easy day on the water.

My friend's grandson was visiting from Minnesota, and he wanted to get the nine-year-old on a bluefish or bass.

    No problem, right?

Well, they hit traffic on the way to Marshfield, so we didn't leave until around 10 a.m. And once I cleared the breakwater, all the "close in" spots were very, very dead.

I pointed the boat toward the dump deep inside the bay and figured we'd troll bunker spoons for bass. Ever fish in a salad bowl? I'm not sure I've ever seen so much weed in the water. Our next stop was Billingsgate where the conditions were about the same. My friend did manage to catch a SQUID on a jig. WTF?

We completed our grand tour of Cape Cod Bay off Plymouth, where we finally found some fish on top. Salty's plugs on light spinning gear made short work of some bass and blues for the little man.

    His smile says it all.

Smiles like that make it all worth it. I doubt the little guy will rember it as a tough day of fishing.
