So this is my first post (I'm a newbe)and it's from last weekend but might be of some value to someone. Headed out of Plymouth Harbor early afternoon Fri the 6th with a couple o' day hangover from the 3rd,4th, and 5th of July. Came around the Race and saw a lot of whales a couple of miles from the SW corner. Kept going down to the shipping lanes towards the BC bouy and Crab Ledge. Heavy weather was right in front of us. A big lightening storm to the east of us, another on coming over Chatham and another one behind us over Orleans. So we were kind of stuck because the weather had kicked up good and the lightening was blasting the water on Crab Ledge right ahead of us so we couldn't go there so we decided to go lines in about 3 miles north. Noticed a big fin in the water a couple of feet from the boat and got a big tail slap on the side of the boat by a large thresher shark (note- to-self for the OB Monster Shark Tourney next weekend). Couple of minutes later we were tight to a 90lb tuna. He hit a squidbar made by the guys at squidbars.com in Sciuate. The green and yellow one. Nice fish. All that happened with in a 1/2 hour. It was getting darker so we brought the lines in and steamed down torwards Nantucket. We spilt 2 separate lighting storms as fast as the boat would go. Pretty intense since we were listening to the WX weather computer/guy talk about what to do when lightening hits your boat as we shot the gauntlet. beat the storms unscathed and stopped at the rip at the #6 can east of Greatpoint and as we said goodbye to the sun, landed 2 nice bass around 40 inches. 2 great nights of partying and bass/blues at Great Point and the plan was to fish our way back up. So we got west of the BC bouy by early afternoon on Sun. and lines in. 6.5 knts. and 6 miles NW of the BC bouy and the oldest 50 with the oldest line goes off 1/2 hour later and the Round 1 bell goes ding. Single green machine w/no bird. My buddy Eddy empties a gallon of the weekends Capt. Morgan and Cokes through his pores onto the deck. 1 hour. Good battle. I don't know what a 5 1/2 foot fat BFT weighs... and I still don't. We were a little short-handed in the 'seasoned deck hands' dept. so while Eddy was playing Angler, I was playing Wheel Man, Gaff Man, and Leader Man. It doesn't work. After the 2nd tuna circle of death, I pulled the hook at the boat. After 2 loud screams and 5 minutes of silence the lesson of that day set in. 3 people that know what they are doing is helpful when it comes to a good fish like that. She'll be a foot longer and a 100lbs heavier for one of you - the next time she shows up in one of your spreads. Driving up from NYC tonight to try and find her brother tomorrow morning. Tight Lines, Bill | ||
