after a nice afternoon of flukin' around ram island i want to try some early evening t&w trolling some boulder fields around stonington. love the light tackle action when it's there. second troll through she hooks up a schoolie & is happy as a school girl. when along side the boat she tries to haul it over the gunnel as i'm reaching for the tube. fish shakes off, hook sling-shots into my wrist...BURIED! she's crying while i'm trying to disconnect the tube from the snap-swivel. buried to the curve in the seemingly HUGE hook i try to back in out, left-handed. no way! swelling tightening up the area makes me realize this isn't a do-it-myself job. snip the hook from the tube & stabilize it with some cling bandage. then i crack a cold one! to hold against the injured area of course. opened the live well & tossed back 3 nice keeper fluke, feeling one surgery tonite is enough. she wants me to go to a local med-center around mystic. i say whats the rush? i can wait hours near home as well as 60 miles from home. "you drive while i self medicate a while" got home, cleaned up a little & headed to my local E.R. two hours & some novacaine & i'm outta there, not too bad! home in time for a martini & a nice cigar before turning in. i tried to recall a trick using strong mono & a specific pull angle but one handed it never would have worked...& my wife was an emotional wreck. back on the water thursday & saturday with paying sports! anyone know the mono & pull angle method for hook removal? cheers! cap'n mick | ||

| Wow Mick, that sucks. Glad the self medicating worked out for ya. That mono "trick" needs 2 folks for bigger hooks like you had embedded. Take a 12" or greater length of mono and loop it around the curve of the hook. Next, press the eye of the hook downwards, towards the hook point, if ya know what I mean. Then, put a 2x4 in your mouth and have the other person give a sharp yank in the opposite direction of the hook point puncture. The last time that happened to me was MANY years ago, and in my palm. I did the "macho man" routine and forced the hook all the way through and snipped the barb and then backed out. It hurt more than I can say, and if I recall, I may have whimpered a tad (OK, alot). Personally, where feasible, I would prefer the medical facility approach these days, but that is not always possible. | ||

| yea, after trying to manipulate it out i could feel the barb "hanging up" on something producing a tingle to my fingers. not worth risking nerve damage. i think even if i was offshore, stabilizing would still be the best option. could even finish the trip if i didn't have to be the guy on the rod. all is well................mk | ||

| http://www.kevinwakeman.com/fam/hookout.htm#F This is a link to the removal procedure plus it also shows the old fashioned push it through, cut it off, pull it out "macho Man" technique. Glad you are OK. I had a friend who hooked himself in the eyeball a few years back while flyfishing and he pulled the hook out in a panic which was the worst thing he could have done. 1 year wearing an eye patch and several surgery's to get back 75% of his sight. I always wear sunglasses while flyfishing now just in case. He always wore them too but had chosen not to wear them because it was dusk and getting dark. | ||
