Looks like the boat is from Old Harbor marina in Clinton. We were just looking at the home made pilot house on this on Monday. An eery feeling when you know the boat and have seen it out fishing to know that's the one in the pictures.

What a shame ,I think I read that the woman was found wearing a pfd .Had to be exposure The boat was found anchor'd also which seems strange. Maybe they drove away anchor'd and it flipped them .Speculation only
Our prayers go out to there family

Sad Story

I think I recognize the boat as well. I did not fish yesterday but the wind seemed fine and the current was not really that strong this week (it will be wild next week). There is a unique story to this tragedy that will most likely never be known. Seems strange that no one saw them flip or happened to be out fishing and came upon them (I assume they were bottom fishing in the daylight but maybe they were anchored up chunking in the dark?)

Stay safe out there. Jack

Heard it on the radio..........horrible, horrible mishap.

I'd be interested to see how the boat was anchored. Had a buddy do the same years back on an 18 footer anchored off the stern

Thought and prayer to all the families suffering from this tragedy.

Do not see how it could have happened

If anybody finds out how a boat at anchor could flip over like that I would like to know how it could have happened. The tides are at a monthly low so the currents everywhere are at their minimal flow rate. The winds have been so mild, that for the last two days I had to fish in my shirt sleeves. Do not see how a boat that large could flip with minimal currents and wind even if he did get his anchor line fouled in his prop. Something else must have been the cause. I can think of only two possible causes. If the craft had taken on uncontrollable water flooding due to hull or plumbing failure; then it would make sense that the boat could flip over whether or not it was anchored. I had a boat flip on me (no one was aboard) during a hurricane, the entire floating dock it had been tied to had flipped and several dozen boats were heavily damaged. When my boat was found it was anchored. I had the anchor line tied to the bow eye, with the anchor resting on the floor boards. When the craft flipped, the anchor fell out and the boat was then anchored. The anchor had nothing to do with the boat flipping over. The second reason is he may have run afoul of tug towing a barge. If anchored, and at dusk, then there is always a possibility the tow line could play havoc with even a very large craft.

Jack, We were out at southwest during the day, and for most of the time we were out, Six Mile was deserted as well as the humps north of it.
We did see a large freighter go by south of there, and were talking of the wakes they throw.

Sad Tale

Bob & Mag - thanks for the update on local conditions. It is puzzling. The New Haven Register had an interesting story on the boat (the owner had a 24 footer with a bad engine and traded down). The boat brand appeared to be a "Midland" (not one I am familiar with). It could have been a big wake but its still weird (I grew up with big wakes in the New Haven area with small boats and never had a really big problem - but do have a wild story that I won't go into in this post). Anyway - the paper said the boat was bow heavy - according to the marina (Old Harbor in Clinton).

What is interesting was that I watched the coverage late last night (11) to check out the boat. I had watched this boat all year at outer SW reef, he appeared to be a big scup fisherman and I saw him out in moderately crappy weather quite a bit (I was out also) - but the boat appeared to handle fine and he knew what he was doing. I was drifting next to him one day (it was choppy) and he asked if I had jumper cables (I didn't) and I asked him if he was OK and he said yes. Not a long conversation but this makes this incident more dramatic for me.

Its great that we don't have more loss of life at sea, when it happens it really hits home.

May they both rest in peace. (very sad) Jack

Boat sinking

Did not flip on the way in according to local reports. It was at anchor. If you look at the photos attached above you can see the anchor line.

I have anchored on a tight line in the same spot and have taken waves over the bow... (not a good thing)

That day the water was glass.Maybe while he was running, his anchor got loose and fell in the water.
