After reading this thread, I would agree with all of the posters about the safety aspects of being on the water under any conditions. As this sad tradgedy illustrates, things can happen very fast and unless one is really prepared, end in disaster.

The guy left two children who now are minus a Dad, very very sad. My thoughts go out to them & the rest of the family of both the victims.

End of the story

The body was recoverd in Greenport. (Kind of interesting.) He was the owner of the boat. He was recovered but we will never know the story of what really happened - we can guess based on the pictures and our chats about this tragedy. God bless him and his family - earlier in the year I had brief chat with him while he was anchored up at SW - so it makes it even more "close to home" for me.

Stay safe out there - I have a week or 2 left and have always pondered the fact that falling over in late November is pretty much a "death sentence".

My weird story - went out with 2 buddies this year (mid-October) - spent a long day togging, catch and release after we limited out early in the day. I was tired and washing the engines standing on the "euro-transom" (outside the cockpit)after a 9 hour day on the water. Pondering the fact that being on the transom had some risk. Next thing I realize is that I'm standing on the "bottom" with the scrub brush still in my hand. The "diver reflex" kicked in and I did not suck in any water - I realized what happpend and "rocketed" to the top - and my buddies fished me out - what was disturbing was that we had a strong incoming tide and I could have been swept under the docks and the next set of boats. (I'm happy I'm still here- my "inner joke" is that the grim reaper was hanging around Clinton in October.)

I had slipped or fallen off and went right to the bottom with my bibs and sea boots on. I've boated/fish since I could walk (turned 50 this year) - and this is the first time I have ever had an experience like this.

Anyway - I grabed the dock with both arms and my buddies pulled 190 pounds of wet, aging angler onto the dock with a look of shock on their faces. (No way I could get out all by myself.)

I'm laughing but it could have easily been "all over" for me. Ponder what "safe" really means - even at the dock.

Did they say exactly where? I couldn't find that info out.
Parts of Greenport are actually on the north shore of LI. I don't think the body would have gone through the gut, past the Bug light, around Shelter Island and pulled up to Claudio's.

My guess is some where west of Truman beach.
