Montauk Sportfishing Report 7/31/06

7/31/06

Things are starting to look up. Striped bass fishing has improved greatly, with a real nice class of fish here. Live baiting
with porgies is working pretty well, with the biggest impediment catching the bait. Trolling is also producing good sized
fish.
Fluke fishing also seems to be picking up some, although if the weather keeps you on the north side it will be hard to get
anything to eat. The south side has better fish.
Shark fishing is still ?One Bite? or nothing. You have to put in your time to catch a shark, but when it comes it will most
likely be a thresher or mako, although there are also some of those big fall bluesharks around. Most of the action is east
of the Hole and inside the 750 line. Star Island is holding it?s Mako Mania tournament this Friday and Saturday.
Threshers also count.
We?re starting to hear about some yellowfin action around the 500 line, but I haven?t gotten much more details than this.
Apparently the SEA WIFE made the run and did well. That?s the best I can do until later this afternoon.
It?s looking pretty lousy for the fluke regs next year. You would think that as lousy as the fishing has been this year and
the number anglers going out on the head boats, that there would be no way we could go over the recreational quota this
year. Well, maybe we won?t, but that might not make any difference It looks like the fluke biomass is down, and they
might cut the overall quota. In other words cut the size of the pie instead of just our share by forty percent or more. Do
you think maybe it is possible that the baby fluke are all being eaten by the GODDAMN DOGFISH? The powers to be
can claim a real victory in bringing the dogfish population back to twenty times it?s historical size.
