Was out Saterday, around the mouth of the river. Caught 3 keepers within an hour on an outgoing tide. All action was by can 7. The biggest bein a 24 inch. All caught on smelt, started with squid but the porgys are thick in that area right now. The fish seem to be movin in!!

| Nice fluke. Fishing has been tough with size limit and quantity of fish. Mouth of river is tough to fish on weekends. I think you did really well | ||

| You did real good at can #7 on a weekend. Even though it was flat calm, one can almost get seasick from the bouncing around due to constant wakes of the heavy weekend boating traffic. I fished that spot myself several times last year but never on a weekend. We call that spot the backside of Ram Island. Actually, I never really did good there but every year you read about someone like yourself who ended up having a great day and with some really nice sized fluke caught there. Last weekend I was targeting scup by white rock and my daughter caught a 4.5 pound fluke fishing for scup. We never really fished for fluke, yet caught two while anchored and fishing for scup, so the fluke must be in pretty good in our area. The biggest problem I have been having lately in the Lord's Point area is the incoming tide during the early morning hours. Draggers are doing their thing before daybreak and tearing loose all kinds of eel grass just to the east, or uptide of where I like to fish. It becomes almost impossible to fish as acres of eel grass drifts down on where you are trying to fish. I have yet to see large schools of herring or bluefish tearing them up this year in the Lord's Point area. However, when a minnow is dropped down for fluke, you can see the characteristic chunks taken out of the minnow's back by squid. The draggers are coming in with squid so I imagine the bluefish could be around, it is just that when they feed on squid there is usually not too much surface action. A bucktail with a white grubtail on it does a great job of imitating a squid. I think tomorrow I am finally going to have to target fluke using a bucktail with a strip of fluke belly on it.

Went out just before dark to look things over (it was a beautiful dusk) and a small school menhaden broke the surface all around me. I casted into them with a crank bait thinking they were small Taylor blues until they broke the surface and I could see what they were. No gill or cast net in the boat so after a hasty search through three tackle boxes looking for a snag hook I finally found one. Of course it was too late as the school decided to call it quits for the evening. Still, it really brighten up my spirits to see the menhaden about as they will be a drawing card for all kinds of game fish in the very near future. It is about time they showed up!
