Hi,

As a fisherman I want the longest season possible. I want that also for the pb's. So if it is a 20" fluke for a keeper that is okay with me. That means I have to find locations where bigger fish hang out. I like a challenge like that. The secret is to fish out of ports that have a hot bite on. Nothing new about that but many anglers don't do that. Why fish in a barrel that is void of keepers.

PS, Regardless of the regs I can guarantee that NY will be over its limits again. HA, like we are all great flukers!!!

I don't get it???

What's the difference between line 9 ane line 10? How can you have the same season times, same reduction percentage, same size limit, with one less bag limit?

Who's the math wiz writing this stuff.

I see what you're saying L about 9 and 10.
Also same with 1 and 2 but at least there is a difference shown in reduction and 3 isn't much different than 1 and 2.

Another thing is look at the numbers for New Jersey. Quite a bit different from NY and CT.
One thing I learned from Connecticut's fish biologist at the meeting I attended in Clinton last week, for every week on the front half of the season we gain, we would need to sacrifice two weeks on the back half.
With so many variables in the equation I'm sure the sky is the limit (no pun intended)for the variety of season regs.
Like Capt. Neil, I'm for the longest season. I'd rather be out on the boat fishing than get more fish/day and a shorter season.
I do foresee a regional approach to the regs in the near future.
At our meeting there were examples of a 3 and 4 state region and what limits would be base on quotas for the group.
States listed in the combination were MA., RI, NY and CT.
Wouldn't it be nice to fish Long Island Sound and not worry about which side of an imaginary line you're on when fishing various areas.
At this point all are proposals and I'm not sure where these two states are aiming to go.
Thought I'd post the info for all to see. Not sure about public meetings when/where etc either.

it all has to do with the mortality.

They Know your not really going to catch that many that make 19 inches

they number will stay pretty static as long as the date do so 9 and 10 will be the same

What surprises me more is the big reductions at the end over the full year seasons

NJ 2007 Regs Set

May 26 to Sept 10 - with 8 fish at 17 inches being the limit. So they raised us a 1/2 inch. Not too bad.

Hi,

Yesterday the Fisherman mag arived. They have a list of options for fluke that the DEC can decide from. I am amazed that they are considering a 4 fish limit as early on there were rumors of a 1 fish limit. I never believe what is written in advance until the law is written.

There is a meeting on March 15 at DEC that I hope to attend.

Opt 7 19.0" May 6 - August 31 4 fluke 48.6% total reduction

Opt 8 19.0" May 12 - Sept 9 4 fluke 48.5% total reduction

Opt 9 19.0" May 6 - Sept 9 2 fluke 49.1% total reduction

Opt 10 19.5" all year 4 fluke 56.1% total reduction

I will never claim to understand how all this plays out. How we can fish all year and have the greatest reduction. Yes, the fluke has to be 1/2" longer BUT if you go where the fish are you will catch big fluke. This is what many anglers miss out on. There is no guarantee that fish will come back to an area year after year. This is why you have to stay up to day with fishing reports etc. The anglers that complained that their fluke season was terrible were fishing in the wrong locations. It has gotten to the point where an angler has to travel to where the big fluke are being caught. This is why more anglers are fishing outside inlets and into the ocean. Find the bait, especially squid, then look for the bigger fish.

I still favor the longest season. Tieing up your boats on Sept 12 until other fish appear just not make sense to me. This will take some pressure off the tog which are under tremendous pressure. We do have a finite supply of these wonderful tog as well as all other fishes.

Just listen to all the boats that will target tog this spring during their spawning season. That is cutting our throats in the future. Just my humble opinion. However, anglers want to catch fish and people in the business have bills to pay so they have to shift.

This I can quarantee!!! Whatever the fluke regs are NYS will again be over it's quota!!! There is a BIG STORY somwhere about that.

Beware of any group trying to shut down fishing areas. Once closed it is almost impossible to get an area opened again. Remember they get paid to do this, their job. They don't care about the fish, just about getting results. Ever wonder why they don't try to shut down all the polluting golf course, all that fertilizer and pesticides??? I do.

Mullaney, Thanks for the update on New Jersey!
Capt. Neil, I agree and am for the long season. I just want to get out there and fish as long as possible. Let me know if you go to the meeting on March 15th how it goes. Also if proposed numbers change.
I know here the original set of numbers was different than those proposed at our meeting. Infinite is the variations and combinations for the regs.
Another thing that was discussed at our meeting was fish mortality on released fish. I recall they said about 10% mortality. Not sure if that's figured into the equation when they set up the regs.
Good to hear points of view from other areas.

They give us the 10% mortality rate number also and I do believe that the powers to be include it.
