| I planned to go up to NPT tomorrow and fish all night for squid, into Sunday. I think we are going to have some crap weather, that coupled with iffy squid reports means I'm still up in the air. Scup, thanks for the info about Stonington. My father and I tried there last year, with no luck, but it may have been too early. Anyway, if I do go, I'll post up a report. I'd like to get some squid for my own eats, and bait. That would be great to stock up on it for bait, no more 5 bucks a box every other day. Just going to tackle shop was out of the way and cut into fishing time! |

| A guy here at work said it started already. He said his uncle went last weekend. He is Phillipino and is usually my barometer as to when they are here. When it heats up, his whole family gets out there to catch squid. It looks like it could be a pretty fun night of fishing with my son when it starts. He has not gone himself yet though and is only relaying his uncle's experience. It may be too early. GP |

| Stripey, Actually, last year when I dropped off my catch one day, the commercial guys at Gambardellas' (Stonington Commercial Dock) did tell me the night before they killed the squid. I had to give it a try that evening. I took a squid jig along and worked it for ten minutes; nothing. I was not about to stay up all night screwing around for squid when I could buy them for $1.50 per pound so I left. It would appear to me, that they move about quite a bit. If you are into them, it is one right after another. Getting back to Newport, a few years ago I was watching a young fisherman fishing the northern most Navy pier (not the one where the carrier is at.) He would jig up a couple of squid near the middle of the pier, then he would run down to the end of the pier with his live bait. He would quickly land a couple of bass then repeat the cycle. He did not seem to have any trouble about catching squid, catching striped bass, or running half the length of the pier. I was thinking about trying the same, but after just two running jaunts up and back along that large Navy pier would probably be enough to send me to the emergency room. There was another area that held squid just North of these piers where the Navy keeps a TWR (torpedo weapons retriever), in a protected area, however, this site is definitely secured to the general public. Lastly, while I have never heard of anyone catching squid off the Fort Trumbull fishing pier in New London, that is one monster of a fishing pier. Before the Navy gave it up, I used to fish it all the time but for fin fish. Perhaps somebody could give us some feedback if that pier could be a productive squidding area. The State pier, near the New London train station, is in a very seedy part of town. I do not think I would recommend fishing that pier during the wee hours of the night under any circumstances.

| Took the boat from wickford over to gould, newport bridge, goat area, then back to gould. Just got back. Saw 4 other boats trying for squid and a bunch of people in the bridge. Nada for us. Did snag some bunker though. |

| I'm hearing very small catches right now at the bridge......very small.....and with this "cold snap" it might slow down the activity a few more days.... They're there somewhat, but apparently not "eating". More inquisitive.

The Bay is choked with pogies right now, you must have been having premonitions....I predict a blood bath in the bay this year, stripers dying all over the place! Lets just hope that there are no large stinky fish kills.... The squid are here and there in very small pockets, but could show en masse any day now....

| We went up there on Saturday night. We got 5 squid between the two of us. This was for a couple of hours. I think if we stayed longer we would have done better. Wifey got cold! Saw some sandworms swimming freely in the light off my boat. Pretty cool. |
