Report from Saturday

Hello All,
Left from Apponaug at 5:30am with two buddies. We headed down the bay and ran into a school of pogies at dutch Island, snagged a few and
ran down to Beavertail to make a few drifts with them and the eels that i
had. Had one nice run off there on an eel and my friend blew the hit.
No other action so we decided to pick up and run down to South County
since the weather forecast was completly wrong and the seas were flat
calm.

We arived in front of the beaches just in time for the outgoing water
and began making drifts just NW of the Nebraska Shoals buoy in about
55 feet of water. We worked this area for the next 4 hours and picked
up 40 fish with 10 keepers... largest was 25" caught on a glo daddy with
a whole squid. No real monsters but consistent action the whole time.
Many fish were 18 inches. We used glo daddies tipped with squid and
also picked up some on Spro bucktails towards the end of the bite.
Water was 68 and seas were 1 foot.

We decided to head back to the bay and do some Bass fishing with the
incoming tide over at Sandy Point but we never made it. About half way
back, just about between Pt. Judith & Beavertail, I notice a giant
huge brown cloud that stuck out like a sore thumb in the greenish blue
water. I cruised over to check it out and it turned out to be the biggest
school of pogies I have ever seen. About 25 yards long and ten yards
wide with Blues and Bass hammering them from below.

For the next three hours we hung tight with the pogy school that was
getting shreaded and tossed poppers, plugs, and jigs with light
spinning gear. I was lucky enough to hook and land a 43" 35lb Bass with a
Kastmaster on my 3rd cast. We had a few other smaller Bass but it was
very very difficult to get anything past the 10-15lb ocean Blues. We
also tried snagging the pogies and dropping them way under the school but the Blues were just RELENTLESS with anything that was thrown in the
water. This was in 100' of water and we were the only boat fishing the
school the entire time.

Needless to say the boat was a little messy after the 30 or so blues
and snagging all those pogs....Final talley was 40 fluke, 30 or so
Blues and 3 Bass. Great summer day on the water! Good Luck everyone!
