Unhappy RI makes two new commercial gear endorsements available

I was shocked to see that I have two new endorsements available this year...Purse Seining, and mid water/pair trawling

I am dumbfounded as to why they would make these available, knowing what I know about mid water/pair trawling. I suppose they will only be able to purse seine pogies, as what other fish that swims in our state waters in any abundance for any time that is worth seining? Now if the giant run was what it used to be, it would certainly mean alot to many permit holders I would imagine.

Never mind that in a time of federal cutbacks and other limiting factors, it appears we should be protecting our waters from these types of methods on a large scale basis..??!!

Wouldn't you still need a federal permit for the giants?

Yes, but there is currently no limited entry into that fishery. With the federal permits in place, they could legally purse seine within RI waters and then land the fish here in RI for sale.....

It is the destructive power of the mid water and pair trawl fisheries that really has me worked up, but I am afraid there will definitely be at least 1 other commercial operation that plans on seining menhaden in the bay and just out front.....

Mid Water and Pair Trawling should be OUTLAWED, period. It is a decimating practice when combined with the electronics of today. Think about, years ago, these outfits had a much rougher time locating the schools and spent hours trawling up little. Now, with the sounders the way they are, they don't even target smaller schools, they look for the massive balls, and then multi pass them until they take the whole school (since they typically school right back up after a pass).

GRRRR.
