RI proposed Menhaden (Pogy/Bunker) changes

This one is always a battle. I think there are a couple of good proposals here. It just always seems that come June 15th or fathers day we run out of Menhaden in the bay.

Unhappy

Hope they dont end up like our CT alwife's and blue backs. They didn't regulate those properly and we are paying dearly for it.
I say may each man catch his own... 120,000 lbs a boat!!!! thats overkill at best.

ps. wasste not want not, pogys I see guys over fill livewells and throw away almost whole ones cause they7 aren't alive anymore. I catch alot of bass on chunk too. A little conservitive behavior on ALL our part can make a big differance!!

My understanding is that DEM will not allow thw pogey boats to operate until there is an estimated 2 million pounds in the upper bay. The the boats can be no larger than 65 ft. limited to to cetain amount each day. This elimated several boats that exceeded the size limit.

Here in CT, commercial guys cannot use a purse seine. Years ago, when we allowed Delaware purse seiners to come into our waters at $500 per pop, they decimated our bunker. The blue and bass fishing dropped off as well for which many blamed our regulators for being so greedy as to sell off our recreational fishing for such a trifle. I remember seeing their mother ship just south of the entrance to the Thames River. They actually pump the fish into the mother ship. Bunker are a very dumb fish and are a sitting target for purse seiners. I might be wrong on this, but the only commercial value of bunker that I know of is for its use in the makeup of animal feed, fertilizer, and lobster bait. Considering how the lobstering has been going, the last use is a drop in the bucket. For what it is worth, when blues are around and chomping up bunker, a fresh bunker cut into bite sized chunks makes excellent scup bait. I doubt that any of those passing these regulations would even know that bunker makes up part of the scup diet especially when they get help from the blues.

If they estimate 2 million, 120,000 lbs per boat = 4 boats 4trips bay almost empty.

Bunker Value

They are feed stock for industrial processing (Omega Protein). If I had time I would get a link for you. Refined menhaden oil is even showing up in food products. I bought some really good salad dressing fortified with Omega 3 oil after reading the label I was a bit surprised... Menhaden oil - and the salad dressing has no fishy taste.

If the menhaden boats are coming from out of state I have no idea why its allowed at all. Supporting a local commercial fishery is a very different than allowing out of state boats into state waters to practice "industrial fishing".

like all bait fish, they arent cute, furry or sexy, but everything cute furry or sexy relies on them for food, dietary supplements, make up , etc.
I would love to see bar rafaeli with a "save the menhaden" bikini without any makeup on
