Something Wrong with Blacks this year

Went out for Blacks yesterday, was the high hook person in the area, 5 fish, biggest being one small keeper. Talked with a fellow commercial fisherman fishing near me, none at the rockpile I was fishing at, a couple (one keeper) at the Stonington Breakwater, Red Reef, zip nothing, White Rock, zip nothing. My fish pots are coming up empty. So far this season, I have tried White Rock three times, not even a short. Papers say wonderful things about White Rock, but I have yet to see anyone or hear about anyone hitting them there this year. Look at TRIPLEJ post for Latimer, almost skunked. Latimer's Reef, the D/L buoy, and the red nun just to the east of the Light have always been traditional toggin hot spots. The only place I have heard fish being caught in good numbers is at Ram Island Reef, but that is to be expected since it has always been a bountiful toggin place. After looking up my last year's logs, I am way off for this season. I am not buying in to the water temperature bit, since I did hit them hard a few weeks ago in the shallows. Maybe things will improve, but from where I sit, the DEP could be right this time, the togs could be on the decline, and something drastic has to be done.

You are right something is wrong. I personally think it water temps. 3 days ago it was 90 out. the water temp was 70.
we been having trouble with them, but when we do find them its a very good day. saturday we limited out in 30 mins. sunday we got 3 fish.
most of the hot spot are not producing.
the spring we had trouble also. they showed up a week before the close.

i feel a week of cool weather will get things turned on.

Been toggin for 50+ years. Been telling the DEP for years that the togs were in truoble. They tell me I'm wrong, that their numbers don't support that. Guess they don't fish much. I think the relentless commercial fishing and the clam draggers play a role in the decline.

Have no real idea what is causing it, but have seen the same in the Clinton area. One day hammering them and the next it's a fight to catch some.
It seemed much better when the season first opened but the last week or so has tapered off drastically.
Not knowing enough about these bulldogs, I wonder, do they move off a given area to a fresh area that they haven't picked through the crabs yet? Would a storm approaching send them off the wall and shallow water into deeper, more protected areas.
Went out this morning for a couple hours of feeding cunners asian crabs and only one hit from a black. Three of us with no togs to show where only days ago would have been catching many fish.
Would love to discuss any ideas you guys have, things to look for, places to check.
I know of some small rock piles in deeper water and wonder if they hunker down till the storm passes and things clear.

Sorry but I don't have much faith in "their" numbers. No one there can really believe
they have any kind of accuracy where, when, how are they getting these numbers?
I've not seen encon in my area this year yet and haven't been checked in over a year.

Tog mirgrate from deep water to shallow then from shallow to deep.
I had seen very good numbers in late june and july. mid july they took off.
so i stopped targeting them. I feel they are still moving into the shallows.
like stress said.. the water is still to warm.

I have actually been slamming them from shore in very shallow water. I limited out during the storm Wednesday, and Quite frankly my hooking ability is not quite what it used to be,as it took a couple dozen crabs to get my four keepers. Before the storm it was red hot with big, swivel busting fish. Maybe i just found a hot spot or they have not moved out to your spots yet.

I have another question regarding something wrong.
Has anyone filet'd one to find little black lines in the meat? One I caught last week had a few up near the dorsal fin area and another had them through out the filet.
