Chuck I just usually slit the gills on one side and toss fish in the cooler. You'll be surprised how much nicer the meat looks at the filet table.

Cool

I'm here to tell you the fish are there and in size & numbers. I rod & reel alot and love it but I also free dive and love it too. I think the combination complement eachother. The togs are there and am surprised at the sizes for the high water temps that are present now. The bass are all over the place also and saw schools of 30#'s around Race rock light that were very hard to NOT shoot as I came from CT. This is an irregularity as the larger sizes usually remain around the shoal.
I think with the low psi fronts moving through and higher winds for extended preiods churn the water and visibilty has been VERY VERY poor. The fish don't seem to feed much in these conditions but have no say about a piece of steel in their head. NE waters don't get too good but when you can't see the end of the gun, fish are skittish.
I believe the best is yet to come!!!!

I just insert knife on one side behind gill plate and slit the gills that way. They'll bleed out fairly fast. You can do both sides, though I don't think you need to. One guy I fish with just sticks his finger in the gill plate and pulls to tear the gills...works also.

Never thught to bleed a black but I haven't tried it to see if there is a difference. Some times the fish bleed out when they're shot but can't even say I've expected any thing either. Will give it a try.
The smaller ones also have a green hue to their filet (smaller & legal) sometimes.
