Smile Tog trip 11/03

Got out with a friend yesterday, to fish tog in Clinton/Westbrook area.
Water Temp: 52 and slightly dirty
Depth: 3' - 20'
Tide: bottom incoming and top of outgoing
Bait: green, asian and calico crabs

Took a little time(3/4-1hour) to get the first then it was crazy.
Haven't had a day like this since spring.
We fished a total of approx 4 hours and caught 40+ keepers with about 1/2 dozen shorts. Largest for the day were a few in the 7 1/2 to 8lbs range.
No monsters but lots of good 5 to 6 lbers.
They hit equally the variety for crab offerings we used, being partial to neither.

Really had a blast. took home 7 mid sized fish for some friends that had asked for them and 1 or 2 to bring home for supper.

Fishing improved greatly from last week to this. If you get the chance, it's worth it to get out there.
Good Luck!

Bob, I was ready to pull my boat after two horrible tog trips last week. After reading the post by 74, I decided to give it one more last try yesterday. Could not believe what the INHERITANCE did as it sounded like the Pied Piper of Hamilton, except it was Togs that followed them out of Newport and not rodents. Left yesterday with my clamming tongs, so I would be sure of coming home with something. I only tried for togs because I got tired after an hour of clamming. It was a beautiful day, and the bite was on with some really big Togs (over 10 pounds). Have no idea of what makes Togs so erratic. Perhaps after a month of great trips, I came to expect that it would never change.

Glad you got some good fish! It puzzles me also. One week we hammer em then followed by a couple "what are we doing out here" days, then the bite is back on.
I've got to get out there another time or two so hopefully this trend continues.
We'll see...

Bob, just curious about something in your post? You mentioned water depth from 3 feet to 20 feet. Did you mean 13 feet to 20 feet or did you actually pull some togs in at less than waist deep water. I thought I was the only one that fishes for Togs in waters that shallow!

No it's correct. Behind the boat there wasn't enough water to cover all of our leader.
Just drop in the rocks and hang on. I noticed the fish hitting in the real skinny water tended to try to head for deep water with the crab and actually swam away from the rocks, which made it easier.

Bob, having togs make a run in shallow water (what else can they do) is the greatest sensation. That is why I love to catch them that way. I had thought the in-close waters had cooled down enough such that shallow water togging was history. When this spell of poor weather passes, I will have to give some of my shallow rock piles another try. The only problem I have had with skinny water is there is no consistency; one tide can be great, the same tide the next day and nothing.
