Well, Jim and I headed out today for a "quick" Tog trip. It didn't work out that way. First off we were headed up I95 N this morning, and came to a stop @ exit 75 (or 74, whatever) around 10:30 AM. Accident. Little did we know how bad, until we saw it, and then heard later that 3 folks died in this one. We didn't get to Mystic until 12:30 PM due to this (and the fact that I didn't listen to Jim...important note, and unfortunately right). ![]() ![]() Our reaction (we didn't know 3 folks had died in this accident at the time): Once we got there, it was get the gear and bait on the boat, start her up, and off we went to "the hump" (literally 20 minutes from the slip (and 15 is getting out of Mystic Harbor). Well, we got there, and it was bam, bam, bam...non stop. Bait stealers, shorts, and a real nice mix of keepers. We limited out in 1 hour 15 minutes with 8 Togs, and Jim caught 2 big Trigger Fish as a bonus (they're a REAL bitch to clean, by the way. Their skin/scales are like steel). ![]() We made a quick trip back to Shaffer's... ![]() Unloaded and began cleaning the catch: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A great day to be out, good fishing, good fun. Oh yeah, I95 was still closed, and it took nearly 3 hours to get from Mystic to Westbrook, and then another 1.25 hours home for me. Still worth it. Rarely a season goes by when either I or another commercial pin fisherman brings a couple of them in. When I found out how little value they have, I withdrew them from the wholesaler; I decided to keep the couple I caught and try eating them. Their skin is like shoe leather, but their meat I found is white and quite tasty. Since they are worth almost nothing on the commercial market, I would definitely bring them home for supper. The very first time I caught them, I brought them in to the wholesaler just to be sure they were not poisonous to eat. Again, they make very decent table fare. Probably they have been showing up more and more because of another positive aspect of global warming. I really hope the politicians do not do anything to mess up the current warming trend (I really doubt that they could) since I have not even made plans yet to pull my boat. When the togs move out into deeper water, which may not happen till mid December, then I will think about getting her out. It seems to me from looking at my previous logs, that November is not a good month for winds. It is sort of like March in a way. December is colder, but the winds tend to behave themselves better. | ||
