Tuna Meltdown BLOWS..............

AN ENGINE!

Yup my season is cut about 1 month short. Yesterday my father, my cousin Richie and myself left Marina Bay under the cover of darkness and headed straight for the NWC at around 35 knots. Once there we began trolling 2 un-weighted way back sluggos, a weighted sluggo and a Rapala X-Rap 30. 45 minutes into the troll I hear the rubber band on the Rapala go of like a gun blast and we were tight. The fishes initial run was amazing. I didn't think it was going to stop. I watched the entire topshot disapear and then 2/3 of my dacron before the fish began to slow. With the lines cleared my cousin settled into the fight and was able to regain all of the dacron and about 30 feet of the topshot only to have the fish make another blistering run and then turn and charge the boat. We kept constant pressure on the fish by both accelerating the boat and reeling like crazy but it was not enough. The hook pulled and that was to be our only chance at a fish yesterday.
Anyway I was listening to Dads Dream and their epic fight all day and pulling for them really hard. I can only imagine the determination that goes into fighting a fish like that for so long. But any how I decided to run down and see how he was making out before heading back to the dock and Vin had said that he had fish down at the SWC so we headed that way. We got there and marked a few fish but there was alot more weed in the water and made trolling very tough. I hung out and watched Dads Dream for about 2 hour before calling it quits.
THATS WHEN IT HAPPENED. 36 miles from the dock I begin to hear a noise comming from within the block on my port engine. Then the alarm goes off. I shut the engine down and pull the cover and all looks good to me. Then again if it looked bad I wouldn't know anyhow so I start it back up. The noise is consistant but the alarm is gone so we make the decision to run it untill the unevidable. Well the unevidable happened about 20 miles due east of Point Allerton at about 5:00pm. The Engine started racing like it was in nuetral and I imediatly throttled back and heard and felt the engine clunking and chattering and then it just locked up. I could not turn it over so the rest of the trip was made on one engine at a blistering 5 knots while trying not to cause damage to the starboard engine. It was the most agonizing boat ride I've ever been on. We got passed by sailboats and to make matters worse we were fighting an outgoing tide the whole way through the Harbor.
I'm pretty sure no matter whats wrong with it the boat will have to be hauled in order to fix it. Thus my season is over.
I really have nothing to be upset about. I knew when buying a 10 year old boat with 10 year old moters it was only a matter of time but not much can prepare you for it when this happens.
All told I had the best fishing season of my life and do not regret one minute of it. We landed 12 Bluefin ,all trolling, multiple 25 pound stripers, and a ton of groundfish.
I am going down after work to try and diagnose what accually is wrong with it. I'll let you guys know how I make out.

Danny,
That sucks!!!! It'll all work out......now you'll have two new motors for next season and the tunoids will be running scared

Your description is perfect........reminds me of when I raced motor cross......

Does sound like a great day of fishing!!! That's one hell of a long fight Dad's dream had goin on.........what was the outcome of his fight?

Alloy toy, I think they lost it around 6pm. They saw the fish 3 times and said it was BIG and tail wrapped. I told them they needed to poon it as fast as they could. I am super surprised that a 200# leader held for about a 9 hour fight!

9hrs HOLY Sh1t 200# leader tail wrapped I'm surprised as well. No real way of getting in front of the fish if tail wrapped is there...............

Is that what finally gave the leader? What was it taken on a bar?

Lure of choice was a Braid Marauder? The leader held a nd it was the 80 pound momoi that broke.

WOW!! Sucks to loose a fish after that, but not sure what the quality of the fish would be if landed..............

Dan if you're jammed up for the season, you're always welcome to jump in with us and fish...... it will be a few weeks before I'm out again but the invite is there

That sucks Dan - what a PIA. Will you look to rebuild or repower? Hoping for one or two last trips out myself if I can swing it...
