Tuna Meltdown's 1st Keeper

Well we started off the 08 striper season in the new Tuna Meltdown the same way we left them at the end of last season in the old boat. We left the dock at 6:30am and I quickly realized that my GPS was not receiving a fix from any sattelites. This is my first year in Boston Harbor and I did not have much confidence in my navigating skills with out the GPS. I decided to press on and follow my good friend Chris Mac Donald out of the harbor to the B bouy. Once at the bouy we were instantly covered up by mackeral. About and hour later and a green looking uncle I decided it was time to head for calmer waters to find some bass. At this time I checked the status of my baitwell and to my dismay I see allot of dead macks and my baitwell pump is not working. Two major issues that I got to fix before the long holiday weekend.

Anyway we headed into the harbor with a baitwell full of dying macks. I'll be the first to admit that I have no idea where to start Striper fishing in the harbor but I found Birds, bait and boats working a rip just south of the Long Island Bridge. I got my first schoolie on a yo-zuri and then got a boarderline fish on a mackeral that will live another day. We picked away at the smaller fish and they picked away at our already dwindling bait supply. That went on for about and hour and then my uncle got a run off that was surely a bigger fish. He had lost a couple fish earlier so I held my breath on the hook set. It was solid and he was hooked up to a much larger fish. About ten minutes later I gaffed what was my uncles largest fish he had ever caught and my new boats biggest fish. We did not get an official length on it but I would say it was well over 40" and weighed out at 25lbs. on the boga grip. Not to bad considering the minor breakdowns with the GPS and Baitwell pump. Every once and a while a blind squirrel finds a nut.

Nice, Congrats on the Mack and the big bass Dan. Hope you work out the issues with new Tuna Meltdown easaly. Boston habba is a wealth of bass oppertunities.. You can also look to live line macks outside the habba, like outside the Boston light and The Graves, to name a few. A few more inside spots are around Deer island light the north and south channel Pretty much any place with some currant..

Dan,

My livewell did the same thing last year and we lost 30 live macks. We ended up using the washdown pump to prolong their demise - I think it bought us a little time. Ended up being a corroded connection and 1 shrink tube latter we were back in business. Good luck. Hopefully the macks stick around into June.

Congrats, nice rockfish you got there. I've yet to land one on my boat, but that will change this year, no doubt, as I'll be targeting them a few times.

Nice fish to bad on the pump failure
Wish the macks would swim by us like they did back in the 70s those were the days
